Batman and the Mad Monk | Matt Wagner, Rob Leigh

This is a Batman at the start of his career story.

It follows on from another story but works as a standalone.

I was surprised by this one as it had a vampire theme to it and was surprisingly violent.

It's a Batman battles a vampire cult story, and I enjoyed it a lot.

I thought I'd reread this since I liked the *idea* of Cassandra Cain. I feel her Batgirl design is unsexualised and batlike in a pretty neat way, but I don't love a lot of the art in this one, and it's hard to fully follow without context.

Thanks go to Panda Redd for making me aware of this one's existence. Sure it's dark, sad and gorey, but it's also a rollicking bop though classic literature, (the Little Women kick Deadpool's ass: I appreciate this) and the recognition that a) The comic book characters we know best have some powerful antecedents b) stories matter 1/2

Robotswithpersonality 2/2 c) a violent jaunt in graphic novel form doesn't necessarily do anyone any harm, as long as it's not what the entire comic book industry is reduced to. 2mo

While any abridged adaptation is necessarily going to come with its share of deviations, I think the team at Marvel did an excellent job at adapting this epic story. They even included a cheeky King cameo, with “Rich Bachman“, drawn to resemble King, as one of Flagg's lieutenants. #constantreader #losersclub
Having read both the original edit and this adaptation, it'll be interesting to one day read the “complete and uncut“ version.

I love how Crook handled the deep dark woods in the last panel!

A great read, even if some of it hurts.

And no, Black People don‘t know how to fix racism. I can‘t say I know how either but it‘s White people‘s responsibility, White people‘s work.

My only recommendation is do not isolate yourself from Black art, Black literature, Black news, Black music, Black culture.

Appreciate but don‘t appropriate.

I so enjoy the return to Fairyland.

You can almost feel the joy Skottie Young while writing these stories

While Gert loves a good fight, these covers make her more brutal than she is.

16/100 I've never played the video game or seen the TV series, so maybe I'm missing the context to enjoy this more than I did. It seemed pretty standard post-apocalyptic stuff, two girls escape a military camp/school and see what the world is like outside. 3 ⭐⭐⭐

DogMomIrene The show is amazing. Mostly character-based plots, so I love it. I‘m debating buying a console to play the video game because the show is so good. 5mo

03/100 It's time to crank up some Blue Oyster Cult and read a Godzilla story. This one is kind of unusual, it's not so much about Godzilla as it about Ota Murakami, a man who faces Godzilla in 1957, and spends his life chasing and trying destroy him. If you like Kaiju, then this book is for you, in addition to Godzilla we also get Rodan, Mothra, Hedorah, King Ghidorah, Gigan and several others. The artwork is amazing, full pages of ⬇️

RamsFan1963 kaiju destroying cities and battling each other, while the puny human just try to stay out of the way. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ #Jumpstart2025 #Read2025 6mo
