I love this book because when I was a child, I used to love the story. Just like the girls in the book I wanted to be just like Madeline. She was such a strong character and so adventurous.
pickMadeline is a cute book where when a little girl, Madeline, has to go to the hospital her friends show their support. They want to be just like Madeline. This story is an older story that is still read by many today because of its light hearted message.
This is a great book for all ages. It also shows a lot of representation for abstract families. Madeline doesn't have parents or a brother or sister. She lives with 12 other girls and one house mother. It also gives a positive connotation for scars. Sometimes people cant control the scars they have and at the end of the book all of the girls wanted to be just like Madeline.
pickMadeline was written in 1939 written and illustrated by Ludwig Bemelmans won a Caldecott award in 1940. It is about 12 girls who are always perfectly in line in everything they do and live in an old house in Paris. The smallest of them was Madeline. She was brave, fearless, and daring. One night she woke up in extreme pain and had to get her appendix taken out. Her friends from the house visited and she showed them her scar. They wanted one too.

RíEllie discovered her mom‘s old Madeline doll has a scar on her tummy. She (and her twin brother) are very very concerned so I pulled out the book to assure them Madeline was just fine. Now RiEllie is in a corner reminding Madeline how she displayed that scar like a badge of honor to her friends. I wish I could post her voice in this telling!
