This is a beautiful, subtle story of queer teenage love set in small town Portugal, told alternately in graphic novel and prose poem format. The art is gorgeous, dynamic, and expressive. The words are poetic yet simple, and authentic in a way that brought me right back to being 16 and having a crush.I loved this! Definitely read this if you're a fan of Jillian Tamaki and Mariko Tamaki's graphic novels.

Dutch journalist looks back at 100 years of Russian history. Some memoir, his own history in Russia, from the slow collapse of the USSR to the rise of the oligarchs. Some much older histories, narratives from those who witnessed the revolution in 1917, and saw the new communist order establish itself. I could have done without quite so much self-involved reflection in places. However many of those on Putin seemed prescient (original pub 2017).

[Her father] saves sand from his seaside trips and stores it in the garage....Sometimes he'll give me a starfish in a cellophane bag as a present, but it's always painted some tacky, fluorescent color. In a back room, he has bins of mineral chunks and shells, in the sort of box used for screws in hardware stores. I once picked up a can full of white pumice stone chips that was labeled 'Moon.'

Definitely recommend. I chuckled at the writing & appreciate the message. I admire the book design. The illustrations, though. The illustrations completely took me over. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Maybe nostalgia? I‘d love to see how a child would react. #picturebook #InTranslation

This historical fiction novel transports readers back to the 19th century at the end of the Korean Joseon Dynasty as it is forced to become the Korean Empire. I did not know a lot about the turbulence between China, Japan and Korea during this period, and the book did prompt me to do some research of my own. Despite many elements I usually love, I was not drawn in to the story, although the themes around identity were compelling.
