Book haul from my birthday trip to the Hudson River valley and Ithaca, NY. Not that it was necessary for an excuse to buy any new books, but having one made it that much more fun!

I have a question for you all. I'm having a kind of reading block. I feel like I've lost my passion and I am not able to get out of it , so I wanted you to tell me what you do when you go through this because I'm so frustrated and I really want to read. When I start a book I barely read 5 pages before losing interest again.

Cazxxx It‘s never happened to me but I was thinking maybe audiobooks? I don‘t know if that‘s helpful or not but certain books on audio engage me more 4d
Lauram Audiobooks, reading a book from a favorite author, and setting a timer and focusing for 30 minutes have helped me. Good luck! 4d
TheKidUpstairs When this happens to me, I either turn to a favourite lighter genre (for me it is either rom com or cozy-ish mystery) OR (because sometimes even that doesn't work) I just give in to it, binge watch something, and know that eventually it will pass. 4d
See All 9 Comments
Jas16 I tend to reread an old favorite. 4d
Ruthiella Rereading a favorite works for me. 4d
BarbaraBB I always read a thriller or a book from #Persephone publishers, they mostly are so soothing and uplifting! Good luck 🍀 4d
thebacklistbook I take a different approach and accept that reading isn't for me during that time. Instead I will enjoy a movie or crochet/something that keeps my hands and mind occupied. Or you could shake it up and listen to audio for a while/ pick either fiction or non fiction depending on what you are struggling with. 3d
Megabooks Count me on team reading an old favorite! 3d
Megabooks I‘m sorry you‘re having this problem. 3d

I can't believe September is over and things are already getting creepy. I finished Broken by Lawson after having to renew it from the library. Now reading the Lightning Thief to the kid. I'm having a hard time concentrating on reading anything to myself.

bthegood Hope you are doing okay - 🙂 4d
mandarchy @bthegood 😊 thanks, I am. There's some push and pull above me about what I'm supposed to teach now, after they displaced my cohort. And of course it involves tech, +4 additional people in control of said tech. 🙄 So when I tried the first lesson it was a disaster. Then son is having post-covid issues that are causing lots of time off to see specialists. I'm a little stressed. But it should all get figured out soon. 4d

I finished two more stories in the "A Point In Time" collection.

'Ash Wednesday' was a heartbreaking story based on an actual event - a deadly fire in an elementary school.

'Landing' is about a NASA employee more focused on his job than his new wife.

I like that each of these stories take less than a hour to read. They are so well done the reader feels like they have spent much more time with the characters than they have.

Saddest message I‘ve received. There‘s only one book left in my series and I‘m out of borrows until September. #Lame

wanderinglynn Is this your library? Borrowing only 5 a month seems low. 2mo
AileenRR A long wait til the end of the month 2mo
LibrarianRyan @wanderinglynn My bet is this is Hoopla. Hoopla is a different type of elending libraries. Hoopla is pay for play - so a library pays an individual fee each time an item is borrowed. the library sets limits like how much they can spend in a day, (because different items are different prices), and how many a week or month per patron. This allows patrons full access to all titles.

Other services they pay for the title (at a huge mark up) ⬇
(edited) 2mo
See All 10 Comments
LibrarianRyan @wanderinglynn and have access either permanently or for a metered period (dependent on publisher. Some are 52 checkouts, others are 12 months, or 24 months). But then the library only has the titles they can afford to pay for.

Most libraries that have one of these services has another as well. Hoopla is great for indies titles, as well as big name titles. Plus there are no wait lists in Hoopla. You only have a wait if you have used all
2mo
LibrarianRyan @wanderinglynn if you have used all your allowable access. With other platforms they are more like in person libraries where they have so many copies and you have to wait for a copy to be available.

So yeah it has it's drawbacks, but also it's good points. I know for my library I have to get on before 10 am. The daily budget is normally spent by then so I would have to wait till the next day.
2mo
wanderinglynn Thanks @LibrarianRyan Good info. I have never used Hoopla. 2mo
LibrarianRyan @wanderinglynn Hoopla was really big about 10 years ago for audiobooks and graphic novels/comics. Then amazon bought audible and it started creating problems. Amazon signed exclusive content agreements for audible with the some of the biggest audiobook producers (most notable Blackstone Publishing) meaning those audiobooks were no longer available to libraries until the book had been out for 4-6 months, sometimes longer. Then you had Recorded ⬇ 2mo
LibrarianRyan @wanderinglynn Books really want to close their loop in audiobooks and stick to the one title at a time, with a large markup. So it took a toll on Hoopla. But Hoopla did rebound and has a great niche. They don't always have all the big titles (Audible exclusivity contracts), but they still do comics and GN. Plus they collect a lot of indies (in audiobooks) and sometimes that is the only place for libraries to get those indie books. ⬇ 2mo
LibrarianRyan @wanderinglynn plus for may of the big houses they rotate titles so it may be there one month, then a few months later not. They are also great for back list titles. I really like Hoopla service. And I think it is great for libraries as it opens the entire catalog to the patrons, not just to hottest books the library can afford. Plus their app works great. That's saying something for a platform that does both GN and AB. 2mo

HAPPY #wondrouswednesday @Eggs @DarkMina
1. Everyone around me when I was growing up seemed to love reading. My first memory is of my mom reading James and the Giant Peach
2. I don't auto buy or borrow, but I pre order everything by Dav Pilkey and often 4 of each copy. One for my son and 3 for my students
3. A couple of online clubs, but we all read our own things.

Advice needed! Finally going on our first trip Post COVID! Yay! I pulled Munich out of a hat (literally) and was wondering if anyone had some recommendations for food and/or experiences that are off the beaten path?

JenReadsAlot Enjoy! All I remember from Munich was Oktoberfest! 3mo
RidgewayGirl I lived in Munich between 2013 and 2016 and it was amazing. Definitely go watch the surfers next to the Haus der Kunst and walk around downtown. If you tell me what you‘re interested in, I might be able to give you some ideas. 3mo
RidgewayGirl What do you like to do? I used to live in Munich. I left in 2016, so it‘s been awhile, but it‘s a fantastic city and I can probably give you some ideas if you tell me what you like to do. 3mo
See All 13 Comments
EvieBee @JenReadsAlot LOL! I heard that‘s an amazing experience. 3mo
EvieBee @RidgewayGirl Oh nice! What a dream. We love food and beer, hiking, kayaking and paddle boarding. 🤔 Bookstores! Bakeries! Parks and picnics. Oh! Live music. Thank you so much for your help! What took you to Munich? (edited) 3mo
Cathythoughts I loved Munich, it‘s good to ask those in the know about where to eat… we hadn‘t a clue and made some poor choices. I hope you get some good recommendations ♥️ 3mo
RidgewayGirl If you like to hike, you are in the best place. There are gorgeous hikes easily accessible with the S-Bahn, like the one up to the Ammersee monastery, where you can break for a traditional Bavarian biergarten meal before hiking back. The radishes are delicious. And central Munich is a great walkable city. There are several branches of Hugendubel bookstore, all have English sections. The ceiling in the store at Fünf Höfe is worth seeing and there‘s (edited) 3mo
RidgewayGirl A lively Italian restaurant where the food is made while you watch called Vapiano nearby. Check out the art exhibitions before you go - Munich has an unbelievably rich selection of art museums with rotating exhibits. The Lenbachhaus is great for German stuff. And save time to sit outddors at a cafe on the Marienplatz and watch the world go by. If doors are open, slip into the courtyard of the city hall, it‘s worth seeing. 3mo
EvieBee @Cathythoughts I‘m so glad you loved it! That happened to us on a few trips and I was mad at myself lol! But it‘s part of the experience, right? 😂 3mo
EvieBee @RidgewayGirl Thank you so much for your recommendations. These are all right up my alley. I‘m so excited! If you think of anything else, please drop by again. We have wide varying interests that I‘m sure I didn‘t name half of them. Like when you mentioned the Marienplatz; I love people watching for hours on end! 3mo
Maria514626 Nymphenburg Palace and Gardens are so lovely! Walking around is a visual treat. The architecture is beautiful. I‘m so jealous. I love Munich. 3mo
EvieBee @Maria514626 I will definitely add this to our itinerary. I love things like that! Thank you so much for the recommendation. ❤️ 2mo

So this happened on #storygraph today. What in the what? I‘ve never read more NF than F. I‘m digging this trend!
