Chance | Joseph Conrad
post image

#OnThisDay in 1912, the NY Herald began serialization of Joseph Conrad's Chance. While partially narrated by good ol' Conrad stand by Charles Marlow, Chance was the only one of his novels to focus on the life of a female character. It was also his most commercially successful work, propelling Conrad out of obscurity. So really, I have Chance to blame for having to read Heart of Darkness in grade 11. THANKS A LOT. #HistoryGetsLIT

A biography of Joseph Conrad; the Polish Gentleman, the sailor, the British merchant officer and author. Fascinating in the way that the author shows how his life and career mirrors the changes which were occurring in the society in which he operated. A book of much insight and beauty.

A book of 4 short stories. While Ozick is an excellent writer, I just couldn‘t “get into” this book. I did a bit of skimming. Thr best part for me was this was less than 200 pages.

TheAromaofBooks I struggle with short stories as a format. 4y
AmyG @TheAromaofBooks Me, too. But this was given to me by a friend years ago. I figured I‘d add it to bookspin and just get it over with. 🤣 (edited) 4y

As a view on post-colonialism and modernist texts, I enjoyed the commentary being made of a native Columbian trying take his story back from Joseph Conrad's "Nostromo". However, I just couldn't get into it and was glad when I was finally done. Wish I would have enjoyed this more.

“Our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone - has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash - together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” (from Youth: A Narrative) #josephconrad #litsyclassics #holidayreads

Lovely setting to read, if only I could mute the group chatting down the beach. Can't they see I'm trying to read??!

"The world of the living contains enough marvels and mysteries as it is - marvels and mysteries acting upon our emotions and intelligence in ways so inexplicable that it would almost justify the conception of life as an enchanted state."

I‘ve been waiting for this session for the entire festival. Apparently it‘s yet another unpopular opinion but I was staggered by Heart of Darkness and bought Jasanoff‘s book on him at the start of the week. This is the book launch and it‘s just wonderful (and Conrad was a semi-frequent visitor to Australia!). The point often made is that to dismiss Conrad as racist ignores a huge swathe of his motives and personality. Can‘t wait to read this one!
