One way out of a miserable life of pain, debt, and loneliness is a fairy tale—barflies like to hear one, hunters want to write one, and Tom and Polly drive the plot of their own as the Bonnie and Clyde of 1890s Montana. To Tom and Polly, pursuing a life of escape, beyond the usual conventions and logic, is a noble no-brainer, given that all stories and all roads, even the ones by a beautiful coastline, must end.

I should have bailed but I always get caught up in the “how will it end?!” drama; by the time the end was in site, I was at risk of eyeball injury and annoyed with the inconsistency and repetition. #May2025 Book41

Kudos for multiple strong female characters.

This was such a treat to read. It‘s summer 1951 and 11-year-old Donal Cameron must take himself from Montana to Wisconsin to stay with relatives while his grandmother has surgery. Things don‘t go well and he soon ends up back on a westbound bus. It‘s humorous, heartfelt and honest. The people he meets along the way, the stories he collects, and just the cadence of the language all make this a joyful and immersive experience.

This was a fascinating and informative read. I enjoyed the storyline and characters as they developed. There is so many interesting factors that I can‘t pinpoint where to start, but that would be giving away the book, so I‘m suggesting that everyone read this so they can enjoy

Mostly I‘m working (trying to) because I have a feature due Monday and I am wrestling with the material. But when I need a break I have this to look forward to. It‘s so good!

The town of Gros Ventre was so far from anywhere that you had to take a bus to catch the bus. #firstlinefridays

#walterscottprize I could see, smell, and feel the setting of the historic fiction love story. It is a brutal love tale set in an unforgiving land written in lyrical poetry. A big thumbs up. 4 🌟

#CoverStories #Clouds McGuanes protagonists are funny ,seems that they seem smart enough to avoid bad decisions, walk into them anyway. I read them years ago, not sure if I‘d like them as much now.

CatMS Years ago I has such a huge crush on McGuane I read everything of his I could get my hands on. 2mo
Leftcoastzen @CatMS I here that ! Maybe I should have put his photo in there instead of the front cover! 😄 2mo
