Bailedbailed

This is my second attempt with Barry and I have to conclude that he‘s not for me. I read 30 pages and it‘s choppy and nonsensical and I have no desire to continue.

Anna40 I bailed on this one too 1d
BkClubCare Oh. I am now realizing that I was thinking this was Kevin Wilson. Ooops 1d
BarbaraBB @BkClubCare I prefer Wilson to Barry too 😀 1d

squirrelbrain I finished it but that‘s only because it was short and I struggle to bail. 🙄 I really disliked it. 23h
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain I actually find that validating. I‘m even happier now that I bailed! I used to be how you‘re describing (and can still be), but I‘ve gotten better about admitting to myself when a book isn‘t working for me. It‘s hard! 22h
squirrelbrain Thank you Holly. ☺️ I found it choppy too but also rather distasteful and unpleasant. I was reading it with a face like I could smell something bad. 😬 21h
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain 😂 That‘s hilarious! I‘ve learned to try to read my facial expressions to help me bail. If I have the face you describe or if I‘m rolling my eyes a lot I tell myself it‘s time. It doesn‘t always work, but it often does. 18h

It might be a “it‘s not you it‘s me” thing but I didn‘t really like this one. Based on the premise, I thought I was getting a western with doomed lovers set in the Montana winter 1891. What I got technically followed the description but I never really felt like I was reading any of those things. Lovely lyrical writing but surface level with no sense of place. I never truly felt like I understood the characters & they could have been anywhere. ⬇️

MeganAnn I didn‘t hate it and I wanted to keep reading to the ending, but I didn‘t really enjoy it either. Someone else might love it… it‘s just not for me. 3⭐️ for the lyrical writing style and interjections of humor. (edited) 2mo
squirrelbrain I just read this too and I feel exactly the same way that you did. 🤷‍♀️ 2mo

I liked this but found parts of it over the top. I liked the descriptions of the wilderness & the methods Alex used to study wolverines. I didn't like the absolutely bananapants criminal activity that she stumbled across, spoilers below, a& I found Alexis annoyingly preachy. Even when I agree with the message, which I do in this case-

bookandbedandtea the importance of animal conservation & combating climate change- I'm becoming less tolerant of authors shoving their shoving their opinions at me. 2mo
bookandbedandtea The illegal trophy hunting scheme lost its credibility w me when I read the list of animals caged & ready to be hunted: rhinoceros, polar bear, elephant! There were plenty other exotic animals & the whole concept makes me sick but it also made me roll my eyes & took me out of the story. How are they shipping an elephant in secretly? And even if you manage that how are you continually bringing in huge animals- &big game hunters!-w/o ANYONE noticing? 2mo

The only reason this isn‘t a pan for me is that the author was a 20yo at the time the story takes place and thus his brain was clearly *not* fully formed. TW for the (sometimes senseless, often suffering) deaths of a number of wild animals. The author learned some life lessons, in a good way, but not before I wanted to throat punch him. Also: do not bring a dog along on your tale and then fail to keep me constantly updated on their wellbeing. 3⭐️

My second book bought in Montana. This one was written by a local author who lives in Whitefish where I was staying. The plot was based around Glacier National Park too, and it was so nice to read about a place I am discovering and being able to understand the references and picture the place perfectly. The story follows Ted, a guy who is basically national park police. (Cont. in comments 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻)

i.z.booknook (1) His father died in a bear attack when he was a kid, and he is now investigating a murder that takes place in the park where a bear ate the victim. Ted is battling his own past demons as well as the complexity of a victim that likely deserved what happened to him. The pacing was a little slow in places, and could get repetitive, such can be the nature of investigations. 3mo
i.z.booknook (2) The ending was also a little predictable. However, it was an interesting story, in a really unique setting. (The picture is taken just outside West Yellowstone) 3mo

Rough around the edges & crude, this book follows the lives of a community in small town Montana. It‘s funny, but also sad and depressing. Softball, drugs, alcohol, sex….bad religion, abusive/neglectful parents… friendship. The death at the end hits hard.
