This was an amazing book. To be honest I almost did not read it, I had downloaded the audiobook but the narrator was not for me. The print book was much better.

I also had to google a lot of the Latin names and the print book allowed for me to get the spelling correct.

Leniverse Oh, I have that one on kindle. Thanks for the reminder! 3mo
Pogue @Leniverse YW. It is worth the read. 3mo

Discover the chromatic wonders of the fungi kingdom and the incredible spectrum of pigments and dyes that can be created from mushrooms.

Thank you Chronicle Books & Netgalley for the digital ARC! I enjoyed reading this book. I like eating the mushrooms that are sold at the grocery store. I‘ve always wanted to know about the role that mushrooms play in our ecosystem and I learned so much.

On sale: 9/3/24

This book force feeds academic theories with little evidence beyond the authors‘ opinions. I wanted a close look at the Matsutake mushroom, instead I got many long theory papers without proper citations.
Read for a biased look at the social & cultural world of Matsutake & for even more bias around the science. Some basic mushroom biology is included
1/5 Skim this book if you want to learn about Matsutake mushrooms; read for academic theory

iread2much To be clear, I am an academic, so I am used to reading academic papers (I‘m in science and we don‘t use theory as much, but I do occasionally publish in social science) but I don‘t like when people don‘t cite things properly if they are writing with academic materials and I really don‘t like when people make huge assumptions without the data (or citations to the data) to back it up (edited) 4mo

This was a really strange book. When there are mushrooms involved, I‘m always interested. The main character is a pianist stuck in a loveless marriage, when ghosts of the past suddenly come calling. The lines of reality, dream, and hallucination blur. This is a novel about grief, and the journeys we take to the path of self-realization. I couldn‘t help but think of themes of China‘s ‘left over women‘ in this novel. More on that here:⬇️

It's clear that the author comes to this subject with a sense of wonder, happy to explore new and old questions that don't necessarily have answers. It also seems the author is happy to float off a little farther outside the box than the textual framework might initially seem to support, and that he's happy to repeat himself if he thinks it will help convey the information he's focused on. 1/3

Robotswithpersonality 2/3 There were many nifty tidbits, but it does feel more like a personal journey of the author's relationship to and ongoing studies of fungi, less like an investigative summary of the facts as we know them.
We'll chalk this one up to me having incorrect expectations. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Robotswithpersonality 3/3 ⚠️Heads up:
Nematode worm eating/hunting fungus/mushrooms description and what zombie fungi do to carpenter ants could make great content for the relatively new subgenre of "sporror" I keep hearing about (that I will never ever read) (apparently the second one already has been inspiration for fictional media?)

Robotswithpersonality I did also flip through the Illustrated Edition as my library also had it. A work of art. Absolute feast for the eyes. Photography, microscopy, and illustrations, all in full colour, a gorgeous coffee table book. (Coulda done without a couple of those insect shots. 😶‍🌫️) 8mo
