Pickpick

I picked up this book thinking it would be good for my #natureandoutdoors reading challenge but also that it would be rather a chore to read. I mean letters written by a “lady” in 1865? Well I was wrong. Lady Barker writes amazing letters - full of the sights and sounds of the natural world and lots of pioneering escapades. And they‘re not overly long or wordy! Yes she‘s privileged, and yes, part of the colonising wave of settlers - ⬇️

Centique so definitely read some Maori POV of this time first -but she also really pushed the boundaries of what a gentlewoman was expected to do, which was one positive aspect. Also getting a feel for the changing landscape and birth of towns in the South Island is catnip for me as a history buff. 3y

shawnmooney Do you know about my new series (called Bite-sized Book Chats) of short chats with readers on my BookTube channel? The playlist is here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLU-61cZp1pQdBH5V0Zb9q-2ujl4PY8nhf. I would LOVE to have you come on Zoom and chat with me about this book for an upcoming episode! 3y
