Thanks for hosting this #500kgiveaway @debinhawaii

From the other non-contiguous state, 5 things that bring me joy:

1. My wife @wildalaskabibliophile 👩‍❤️‍👨
2. My cat Black Jack 🐈‍⬛(honorable mention to our other pets)
3. A nice hot cup of tea ☕
4. A well-told story (book, song/concert, movie, play) 🎟️
5. Doing something that benefits others 🌈

DebinHawaii Yay for the non-contigs! 🎉😆 Great list of joyful things! Thanks for entering & sharing! 💛 2w

Dated, written during Obama‘s administration, but that doesn‘t necessarily affect how I feel about a book because I enjoy reading histories. Some of the chapters—corresponding to specific topics—were very interesting, like the one about North Korea. But some chapters felt so haphazard lacking a strong central theme, like the one about peoples gaining their independence, and believe it or not, the chapter about Australia. Themes weren‘t always ⬇️

Texreader obvious so rather than focus on what was being said, I was trying to figure out what the heck the chapter was about. I liked that the author narrated the audiobook—he had a Pooh bear-like voice and he could get away with voicing him! Sadly this was a long investment of time for a so-so rating. #foodandlit #SouthKorea #readingOceania #Australia #marshallislands #micronesia #Kiribati #Tuvalu #Vanuatu #Nauru #PapuaNewGuinea (some just a mention) 3w
Librarybelle Great review! I‘ve liked other books by him, but this one sounds like this one is a bit lackluster. 3w
Texreader @Librarybelle That‘s a good way to describe it 3w

#Micronesia has gone through its own painful occupations

This is already a grim read about the South Pacific islands. There‘s a detailed description of the #MarshallIslands, including how dreadfully its residents are treated thanks to the ultra-secret US base there. #readingOceania @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

My next audiobook. Works for #Korea #foodandlit and some unknowable number of countries for #readingOceania, that I will identify as I go along. @Catsandbooks @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

This #chunkster represents #Hawai'i for my #ReadingOceania2024 challenge. Very comprehensive and a ton of information but given in a way that it didn't read like a textbook. Very interesting and I personally learned a great deal. #bookspin @librarybelle @BarbaraBB @thearomaofbooks

Librarybelle Wow! Over 500 pages! 2mo
KristiAhlers @Librarybelle yes its a very big book but it read fast if that makes sense. 2mo

For #ReadingOceania2024 #Kiribati I decided to read this one. It was by turns funny, depressing and yes, gross. Suffice it to say I won't ever visit and it's proof you can be near the ocean and be most miserable. #bookspin @librarybelle @BarbaraBB @thearomaofbooks

Librarybelle Perfect description of the book! 3mo

A Pattern of Islands | Arthur Grimble

Pickpick

The Gilbert and Ellice Islands were part of the British Empire from 1892 to 1976. The Gilberts include #kiribati and the Ellice Islands became #tuvalu, so I‘m using this book for both prompts for #readingoceania24.

Arthur Grimble was sent to the islands in 1914 as a colonial administrator and I was worried that the book would be very ‘colonial‘ but, although there were a few concerning tales, it seems as though he became very respected ⬇️

squirrelbrain …and an expert in the traditions and language. The book started off quite dry, but soon became rather fascinating and I may even try the sequel. I‘d also like to have learned more about his young wife, and the four babies (all girls!) she had while they were stationed there. 3mo
Librarybelle Good find! 3mo
BarbaraBB Wow. An unexpected surprise! 3mo

I didn‘t know. Now I do. A part of me wishes I didn‘t.

American Airmen were shot down over Chichi Jima, 8 were captured & taken prisoner by Japanese soldiers (what they went thru) & one was rescued by a passing sub. Their truth has been covered up for 60 years by the American & Japanese governments.

Graphic non-fiction horror. Not for the squeamish. A quick read. President Bush makes an appearance as the rescued 9th man.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book about life on a small island in the pacific amused me and repelled me in equal parts. I‘m going to read more of his books but not right now.
