#wordoftheday

“There were two signs that a pope had been elected—the bells of Saint Peter‘s would ring out in jubilation, and carpenters would demolish the masonry that blocked the windows of the loggia overlooking Saint Peter‘s Square. The tradition of sending smoke out of the Sistine Chapel chimney after each scrutiny—black for an unsuccessful vote, white for a successful one—was not instituted until 1903.”

“Some were offended by his dismal and saturnine aspect, the reflection of a contumacious and restless soul, and in him one could see customs poorly suited to the placidity that the person carrying the name of the universal father should have.”

BookishMarginalia I for one feel my vocabulary becoming more capacious with just that one sentence 🤣🤣🤣 23h
Texreader @BookishMarginalia Oh you've made my day! Yes!

I'm thinking I also need to look up saturnine. 😂

Dilara I learned something today! I'd never seen this word before, but because the phrase for “trial in absentia“ in French is “jugement par contumace“, I assumed it had to do with absence. Well, it doesn't 😄 20h
Doll8455 At last my turn to tell what brought me to be a “hanged man”. All eyes and ears were on me as I approached the judge. I‘m sure the prosecutor saw me as a contumacious defendant. “I am counting on more words of the day to describe my sanguinary crime”. 13h

“Allegorical figures were extremely popular at the time; actors and actresses representing Divine Justice, Holy Religion, and Saintly Sacrifice would declaim onstage and then fly straight up to heaven.”

Doll8455 My so-called lawyer began to declaim about my sanguinary crime in the court room. The judge listened with a long lugubrious face. Whoa!! This doesn‘t look good for me. I look behind and sure enough there was the sheriff dangling the rope—- 3d

I didn‘t know the second “e” was silent

“Several hundred boats joined the cortège of the river, and almost the entire town participated in the funeral procession that followed the coffin, which was carried by eight sea-captains, up the steps to the grave…. Lucy herself, pleaded to attend the funeral, otherwise I would not have liked to suggest it, fearing it would upset her, and she also wished us to sit on our usual bench and…⬇️

Texreader seemed to have forgotten completely that it was here they had found our poor old friend dead after that awful night.” 6d

“Gianbattista was learned, courteous, and by now, sober. He was also indecisive to the point of paralysis, deeply suspicious of others, and subject to gloomy silent depressions. Over time, he had developed a highly effective defense to prevent others from seeing the doubts that lurked inside him—a wall of inscrutable dignity.”

Doll8455 The so-called lawyer and my explanation ran athwart and we ended up at cross purposes. His was to plan a cortège for me and mine to be indissoluble. The lawyer‘s inscrutable expression gave no hint as to what he would tell the judge in my defense. I began to feel a profound lassitude. Should I hang or just give up? 4d

“He had little capacity for such [scholarly] tasks and applied himself slowly to studies, passing his youth more in the pastimes of a cavalier than in learning the law. Despite his uncle‘s assiduous efforts, he could not make him forget his nocturnal pleasures.”

Doll8455 My palavering did get more attention from the sheriff as he stood dandling the rope in my face. He assigned me an assiduous lawyer who looked a lot like one of the deputies who wanted to hang me. The lawyer‘s seraphic smile was so false I realized I was faced with an imbroglio. More palavering is needed. 1w

“He‘s supposed to be the origin of my brother‘s death, source of that imbroglio of social mores, whores, and honor, but I wonder if he ever existed.”

Doll8455 Because I was so lugubrious the sheriff considered not hanging me. He had esprit and controlled his deputies. However my sanguinary crime was an imbroglio and could not be ignored. (Whew) Stay tuned. I will palaver my way out of this. 1w
