The House at the End of the World follows four characters who face a terrifying danger from a group of assassins who want to kill them. The story is full of twists and turns, keeping readers on the edge of their seats until the very end. The novel explores themes of good versus evil, redemption, and the power of love.

Dear Dean Koontz,

Let's break up. 💔 I know this may come as a shock, after all, I've loved your writing since high school. But. Over the last few years your writing has changed, and I no longer feel the same sense of joy when reading your books - instead I'm now uncomfortable and feel a sense of dread when reading. This book, which was so glaringly pro-gun, was the final straw. I just can't keep doing this to myself. It's not me, it's you.

Ruthiella I have had to break up with authors before too. It happens. Elizabeth George comes to mind. 😢 2y
tonymp He's always had a libertarian bent. He's tried to tell his audience that X book is about individualism, freedom, and individual choices when it isn't, which happened in his epilogue to Watchers, for example. I think maybe he is trying to be more blatant about his views in his more recent writing. It's funny how his earlier writing was less blatant about it and was better for it! Maybe not funny, but rather pathetic? (edited) 2y
Branwen @Ruthiella It's a very strange, sad feeling! I'm still feeling kind of torn up about it. What made you break up with Elizabeth George? 2y

Branwen @tonymp I think you're right! I somehow never picked up on those views before, but now they do just really feel so blatantly obvious! 😱 2y
Ruthiella E. George and I broke up when she decided to take her series recurring characters in directions in ways I felt were “out of character”, if you know what I mean. I know from Goodreads reviews, I‘m not alone in feeling this. (edited) 2y
Branwen @Ruthiella I know exactly what you mean! 😢 It's very frustrating and ultimately disappointing! 💔 2y

So this one was…odd. I enjoyed the unique storyline and trying to figure out how the main character could survive but beyond that it was kind of meh. The way the author writes the internal monologue and dialog of the characters made them feel very disconnected and cold (which might have been the point) and I didn‘t really understand how the main characters‘ backstory really mattered to the rest of the story. Perfect definition of “so-so”. 🌟🌟🌟

Pickpick

Audiobook pick:
I haven't read a Koontz book in ages, and though Intensity will remain my favorite of his novels, this one is a solid pick. I will admit the first half of the novel is better, with the end dragging on a bit.

Solid Koontz. First I‘ve read in awhile but the style and voice are very much the same as they always were. I appreciated the strong female characters in this one, and nice to see a fox instead of his normal dog as the grounding force. Plenty of suspense leading up to the monsters and a nice relaxing end after all the action. An easy and suspenseful read.
