The Chocolate War | Robert Cormier

I knew this would be disturbing, and yeah. It was horrific. Also: I liked it better when it was called "Lord of the Flies."

Also also: Teenage boys. UGH.

But: one more complete for #192025! This one is for 1974.

I‘m trying to decide if I want to read the sequel. But first, I need a dessert book (which will be the new Morrigan Crow)!

Librarybelle I liked this one better than The Lord of the Flies, but I read it such a long time ago. Good choice! 2w
Sace I had a student years ago that loved this book. 2w
BarbaraJean @Librarybelle @Sace It's such a YA classic, and I see why. It's powerful. It has the same unsettling Robert Cormier flavor that I remember from reading his books when I was a teen! 2w

The whole idea (14 hour audio!) is that parents/adults/caregivers should be the central relationship in a child‘s life, with friends and peers secondary. The authors argue that parents should guide their children in every aspect of life. I agree with this and find comfort in the fact that our kids have friends but neither have groups that matter more than our relationship with them. However, it‘s repetitive and feels over the top at times.

Thanks for the tag, @TheSpineView! 🤗

1. Not to brag, but I was pretty good in high school; I graduated 3rd in my class of over 600 students (thank goodness, for I would have hated to give a speech!). But then I discovered college and was legally okay to drink at the age of 18, so partying interfered with my scholastic abilities for a while. 🤣
2. My students loved the tagged book! Who wouldn't want to kill their English teacher? 🤩

From the back cover:
“…As they study WWII, Ben Ross‘s students can‘t seem to understand how the German people could have followed Hitler and the Nazis. So Mr. Ross created an experimental movement called The Wave. What begins in a single classroom quickly gathers momentum. Before the end of the week, The Wave‘s motto, “Strength Through Discipline, Strength Through Community, Strength Through Action,” governs the entire school…”

This book would make an excellent lesson on being unique and embracing each other‘s differences. I think it‘d be very good to include some social devotional development with this.

1. Usually 3-4 times (workout clothes, daytime clothes, work clothes if I'm teaching or if I have a concert or meeting, PJs).

2. A favorite from my kids' little-kid days.

I love all Mo Willems books and this one is no exception. The story was very funny, cute, and the end was great. I also like this message and i think it is a very similar one to Mr. Tiger goes Wild.
