I think my favorite part of this book is imagining the scandal it caused in the 50‘s. I‘ll bet this is one book EVERYONE wanted to read. This is a pick for me, but just barely. The racism bothered me, and the old men talk I found annoying. Story was fascinating though and I‘d definitely be up for the sequel!

Cinfhen It‘s weird because I was MUCH MORE put off by the racism in Gone With The Wind. If anything the lack of diversity in this book was much more shocking. I can‘t recall a single black character or reference even... I do think the author stereotyped the small town New Englander‘s as being very backwater, almost dim-witted. 6y

Bklover @Cinfhen wasn‘t Samuel Peyton African American? I thought he was. Which I found weird in the context of the story. Maybe I misunderstood. 6y

Cinfhen Yes! He was ( duh, Cindy!!!) but I hardly thought of him as a character but you‘re right. The N word was used a few times and it‘s always very jarring 6y

rubyslippersreads I hated the racism, and the horrible story Doc Swain told the young nurse made me unable to like him as much as I had before that point in the book. 6y

Cathythoughts I really enjoyed this one. I thought for its time & extreme popularity, it was quite radical. Not sure I want to read the sequel though. It‘s almost like this was enough. 6y

Like @Cinfhen I found a lot of these scandals different than I expected. I‘m giving it a so-so because, while it‘s a pick for unputdownability, it‘s a pan for some of the extra-sordid stuff. Also, I‘ll never get over what happened to poor Cordelia! 😢 #peytonplace My ebook didn‘t have an introduction, but I‘d certainly like to read this one by India Knight.

Cathythoughts I agree about it being unputdownable... but I thought it was true to life as well .... sordid , yes . But also true , I thought. I‘m not sure about the Cordelia reference 😬.. I missed something there ...... ?? ! 6y

Cinfhen I love your graphics and I agree, a bit sordid but I thought it was an interesting peek into very early pre-feminist movement. Not too many people have mentioned the school principal...what do u think about him?? He didn‘t strike me as the type of guy you‘d find in the 30‘s or the 50‘s for that matter. 6y

Cinfhen I didn‘t know that @rubyslippersreads I‘m always surprised by these “subtle “ ( NOT so subtle changes) in the introduction it stated that the publisher made the author change Selena‘s father to her step-father. Which alters the book in a VERY specific manner! The implication being it would be TOO SCANDALOUS if the character was her biological father 😾 6y

rubyslippersreads BTW, if anyone wants to watch the old movie, it‘s on YouTube. I started to watch last night, but realized I was kind of “Peytoned out.” 😄 All the “kids” were older than at the beginning of the book (high school seniors), but all the actors playing them looked to be in their mid-20s or older. 😄 6y

Cathythoughts @Cinfhen yes ! To this book ! What a story... Selena & the Doc , I will never forget, such powerful writing about courage. I think this is timeless in its own way ... Thankyou for this ... I would never have thought of reading this book. Loved the truth & heaviness of the stories & the courage & the hope ... you can see how this worked ( in a very toned down way ) for tv. The cliffhangers .... Great stuff 6y

Cinfhen I‘m so glad I read it as well!! I thought it was very well done ~ reminds me of To Kill a MockingBird in certain way. It wasn‘t tawdry or sleazy or sensationalized. I thought it was going to be more about neighbors having affairs and it was really about deep rooted secrets and not petty gossip. Very well done 6y

Cathythoughts I could be totally off ... but is there a Stephen King vibe to this. She ( Metalious) was born 20 years before SK. But this is small town New England & from the introduction, lots of skeletons in the cupboards!! @TrishB have you read Peyton Place ? Are there links to Dolores Claiborne (edited) 6y

I thought if it more like a soap opera Looking forward to it. (I think I read it as a teen so now I‘ll see what it looks like at 58). 6y

Cathythoughts @CarolynM @Cinfhen sorry the SK reference was me getting over excited & googling ... In the intro it says one of the characters is abused ( so maybe some of the writers own history here ?) as Dolores Claiborne is about abuse ( I think ) ... and SK May have based that book ( Dolores Claiborne) on Metalious . It‘s only the small town mentality & the New England setting, where I saw the similarity ...... it won‘t be like Stephen King (edited) 6y
