I listened to this last weekend for St Patrick‘s Day. It was interesting to learn how Guinness began and even more how it influenced culture and made things better related to health and hygiene in Ireland. However, the author was like a full-fledged cheerleader of constant praise for the Guinness family. You learn at the end that the family has quite the history of suing authors….that may have played a part in the tone and content of the book
Well, what to say... Intriguing and cringey as you watch her choices and decisions that she justifies so easily.
Interesting perspective on race and class, economics and society and what we each perceive as entitlement. Very different in approach and extremely readable!
I was fairly indifferent to the work of the Gates‘ Foundation but now I have a new found respect and admiration for Melinda French Gates. I can‘t wait to se what else she does.

I read this because I loved ‘Leave the World Behind‘. This tale of gender, privilege, race and greed was thought provoking and worthwhile but imo not as extraordinary as Alam‘s previous work.
A couple of blankets and pillowcases I made recently for Project Linus, especially needed now in response to flood relief. #DayDevotedTo #Philanthropy @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks
