This book would be great when teaching about social justice. This book acts as a window into the inequities black people faced in our country just decades ago. A significant theme in this book is how determination can get you anywhere.

This is a historical fiction novel that encompasses the life of Ida Jones, who has to hide her race to fufill her dream of being a pilot. Ida decides to join the WASP under a white identity so she can fly. Ida discovers both the joy of flying and the heavy burden of hiding who she really is. As she deals with fear of being exposed, racism, and sexism, Ida grows more confident and begins to understand the true cost of her decision.

In general I tend to avoid WW2 storylines because there are just so many of them and I feel like all the stories have already been told in one capacity or another. But I was gifted this title and it ended up being amazing and one that I can add to my unknown American histories podcast episode in 2026. These women were amazing!
