Holly and the Pittie Party | Julian Frischherz

4 ⭐ This book is depressingly happy. It is about a little puppy Holly who is adopted at Christmas and as they get older and the parents realize that Holly is a pit-bull and not whatever they thought they were getting, they leave her on the side of the street abandoned. Holly just wants to make friends and have a human in her life, but no one will let her because she‘s a pit-bull and Pitbull‘s are deemed dangerous.

LibrarianRyan After getting picked up by animal control, the pound has a special day just to adopt pit bulls. Holly does find a new forever home and learns that pit bulls are not inherently dangerous. This book has a fantastic message but at the same time I hate that this message needs to exist. A pit-bull is only as dangerous as the person raising it. They‘re one of the smartest and most affectionate dogs there is. Some humans are too stupid to realize it. 10mo
LibrarianRyan I love this books message; I just wish you didn‘t have to exist. 10mo

This was really interesting and I was impressed how, with very little information she was able to dig deeper, particularly into statistics, to find that most of the stats in the media accounts are flawed. That is, one of the first peer reviewed articles (which, of course, was then cited in later peer reviewed articles) that did find that pit bulls caused the most deaths was based on flawed stats. LibraryCin I‘m impressed with this book and the amount of research that went into it. 2y

A captivating, heartfelt read for anyone who understands the unconditional love of a dog or any other animal and how their love and companionship can help heal us in so many ways. This story had me smiling, getting angry and also in tears. I loved that it was told through the pov not only of Adam the corporate highflyer whose temper leads to the loss of his job and marriage, but also through the pov of Chance one of the goodest boys ever. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Elizabeth2 I loved this book! If you haven‘t already read it, I also highly recommend Susan Wilson‘s The Dog Who Saved Me. So so good! 3y

There are sad parts thrown in as if it‘s from one dog‘s point of view, as well. Some of the work with the scared dogs reminded me of my volunteering with shy/scared cats, to be honest. The end of the book did a “where are they now?” for both the dogs and the people involved. Of course, “now” was around the time of publication over a decade ago. I realized that none of the dogs are probably living now.

So many good covers to choose from. I believe that animals have so much to teach us; therefore, I choose this book.

A slight focus on Michael Vick and the case against him, but the heart of the story was the dogs being rescued from the fight ring and being taken to shelters and rehabilitated and fostered and given love. There are some awful things in this book, the description of wounds and the things done to these dogs but they are not done to excess, just to let you know what they had gone through. It is a hard read though, I definitely cried multiple times.

I choose this because both of my girls are rescues and they have given me much more than I have given them.
