The Red Lotus: A Novel | Chris Bohjalian

A #throwbackThursday to a year ago, when I was researching THE RED LOTUS, my March 2020 thriller about an ER doc whose boyfriend disappears on a bike tour in Vietnam -- and how so much that he told her was a lie.

Grateful to Library Journal for this pre-pub alert on THE RED LOTUS. Available for preorder. On sale March 17: “Bohjalian reinvents himself with each new novel, and he's at it again. Here, ER doctor Alexis falls for Austin after cleaning up a bullet wound in his arm, and six months later they're taking a bicycle trip through Vietnam. Then he vanishes, leaving Alexis wondering how much danger she's in.”

This is what my nightstand looks like — though, of course, the books always are changing. It often has a few books I have just finished but not yet shelved, as well as the books in the queue. And, of course, there are always galleys and ARCs, and the books that are research for my next novel.

6 years ago this week THE LIGHT IN THE RUINS was published. The novel began as a re-imagining of Romeo and Juliet set in Tuscany in World War 2 and grew into a tale of a serial killer and an Italian family's collaboration with the Nazis — and the price they'll pay years later.

Utterly devastated to hear that the brilliant writer Tony Horwitz has died. I loved his work, beginning with CONFEDERATES IN THE ATTIC, and I loved those moments when our paths crossed. He was such a fine man and had such a precise and inspiring moral compass. I mourn with his readers and his remarkable wife, the wise and generous and immensely talented novelist, Geraldine Brooks.

Today is April 24, #ArmenianGenocide Memorial Day. On this date in 1915, the Ottoman Empire began its systemic annihilation of 1.5 million Armenians, 300,000 Assyrians, and countless Greeks. I‘m a grandson of two survivors. Turkey still does not acknowledge the crime.

This remarkable novel is now fifty years old. I was reminded of that when I read a poignant essay about its importance by the immensely gifted novelist Kevin Powers in the New York Times . This is my personal copy, a first edition from 1969, that once belonged to my mother — one of the world‘s great readers. I love how many books in my library once belonged to her.
