One way I like to define good writing is: the more you want to read it with the least amount of story. It's not that nothing happens in this novel about a young woman who arrives in NYC from the West Indies to be an au pair for a wealthy family, but not a lot happens. I devoured it like a thriller. The voice of the main character telling the story in first person is so distinctive, I can still hear her in my head (and I read this months ago!)

Ruthiella Stacking! I totally agree. If the writing keeps me invested, plot is secondary . 5d

Cathythoughts Great review! Stacked. 5d
sarahbarnes Agreed! Less plot more fantastic character development for me. 5d
Billypar @Ruthiella @Christine @Cathythoughts @sarahbarnes Sounds like you all will enjoy this one. And it would be a great one to pick up to break a reading slump. 5d

But the colonists were too stubborn to accept his invitation.

What the Believers had suspected all along, that the whites were beyond redemption, was confirmed. What else would one expect from people who were a product of a different creation from that of the amaXhosa, people who were so unscrupulous that they killed the son of their own god?

I picked this as I'm trying to diversify my reading away from white western writers. Even though I read a huge range of titles, I can make this change.
Really slim novel, set in 50s I think. Lucy moves to USA as a teenage nanny and sets out to make the most of her opportunity... She's quite devious and self absorbed and exploits situations to her advantage.
None of the characters are that likeable but very realistic!

I‘m not sure how to feel here. There are two different stories. One story follows an an agent involved with the Vietnam Project, his obsession, and his descent into madness. The second story is about Jacobus Coetzee, a white settler in 18th century South Africa on a hunting expeditions that goes awry. I‘m not going to sit here and say I *enjoyed* spending time with either of these men, but I think that‘s the point. 242/1,001 #1001Books

The 2nd book about Tambu and it‘s her 2nd year at Young Ladies‘s College of the Sacred Heart. We follow her through school and a few years after, with a civil war in the background and later The New Zimbabwe. Is the new Zimbabwe any different than the old one when it comes to Tambu‘s opportunities?

A book about colonialism, about how it‘s easier being a European to succeed and women‘s opportunities

I‘m ready for the 3rd book about Tambu

TheBookgeekFrau @marleed Me too! I finally read Bomber Mafia and never in a million years did I think I would be enthralled by the history of precision bombing. And yet there I was turning the pages like they were the air I needed to breathe 2y

This author is very angry, and I felt chastised! First among various reasons for being a tourist! It should be required reading for anyone vacationing in the Caribbean, where the tourists have plenty and the locals do not. Take for instance, water. Tourists can swim in it, and then bathe in it, and drink as much as they like. But many islands have no water source so the locals have to conserve every last drop. From there, the author delves ⬇️

Texreader into how the residents of #Antigua came to live there—slave ships, and the dire faults in the English empire. It‘s a tongue-lashing for sure. #readingtheAmericas @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB 2y
Teresereading Yes it was an intense read. I will be on a cruise ship next year, and felt guilty already. But also very interesting read. 2y
TheBookHippie I‘ve always felt this way about Hawaii and we were there visiting military … 2y
Librarybelle This was a very insightful read for me. So glad I read it! 2y
Texreader @Teresereading @thebookhippie It made me think about the places I‘ve visited. When I was in Venice this summer we talked a lot to a waitress at a restaurant we went to a few times. The folks who work in Venice cannot afford to live in Venice, so they have a long commute to come to town and serve us. Far different than the experience in the book but I try to be considerate and thankful to the locals wherever we go 2y
