Not at all what I expected. A book of a free, if orphaned, childhood in a small Idaho town surrounded by the American wilderness. It's hard and confusing for these two girls, and beautiful. The prose is beautiful. Let loose by the girl's own freedom, the prose creates texture, breathes, sets pace, moves the reader. It's really special.
One of my best books of the year.

rebcamuse I read it in college (over two decades ago) and it didn‘t do it for me, but later on I read Gilead and it is one of my favorite books ever. I should give Housekeeping another chance! 2d
Graywacke @rebcamuse how interesting. In some ways it‘s a book that works wonderfully or not all. It‘s atmospheric, so if you aren‘t into it, well, then it‘s kinda done. I read Gilead twice. First time i found it slow but interesting, second time i caught on so much more and completely fell in love. A favorite book. 2d
