Hilarious and heartbreaking. Erin Bow keeps the suspense going — a late reveal of the traumatic thing that‘s happened to 12-year-old Simon, which necessitated a move to a town without internet — and she keeps the laughs rolling too: a church blessing of the animals gone awry, a murderous peacock, a death metal squirrel cult, etc. This middle grade novel has garnered numerous awards & accolades; now I‘m adding mine. It‘s fantastic. #CanadianAuthor

Today it‘s definitely feeling like spring. I can smell the ‘gentler, more organic pace of life‘ being spread on the surrounding fields.

5⭐
I haven‘t cared about the characters in a book this much in a long time. Especially Leni and Matthew. Kristin Hannah made the state of Alaska come alive for me. This was so very good. From the moment I started to the very last second, I was fully engaged. The narration by Julia Whelan was exceptional.

Wow. The care that went into writing about something so harrowing is felt throughout the book. Frankie‘s entire journey was so thoughtfully and well written that I could see and feel and smell everything on the page. War is ugly and it ruins people and to read something so raw, it pulls at your soul and makes you feel everything. Book #11 in 2024 (their faces are intentional)

First time I read a book by this author, can you believe it?😳I have this book since 2018 thinking that I would not like it...but...
This book is intense and has the trigger of domestic violence. It is very explicit in the physical and psychological abuse. I will say this part was clinically well described. Also it was symptoms related with PTSD were well described.

Ernt and Cora married very young, Cora was 15 or 16 and Ernt was 25.⬇️

Gissy Cora hast not siblings and her parents didn‘t approve her marriage with Ernt. Cora said that Ernt changed after he came from the Vietnam War where he was captured and tortured. Cora asked him not to d listed. Since Ernt return, he cannot maintain a job, drink too much and has mood outburst. He maintains his family isolated. He inherited a home in Alaska and decided to move there with Cora and their 13 year old daughter Leni. ⬇️ 2mo
Gissy (Cont.) Living in Alaska turned Ernt into an abusive husband but also in Alaska Cora and Leni found good supportive friends. The story goes narrating what Cora and Leni lived with Ernt abusive behavior. Then something happens that the lives of Cora and Leni changed. Not much to say after this without spoiling the story.
I will say that it was hard to read in these parts and I felt frustrated with Cora decision even when I know...⬇️

Gissy (Cont.)...her behavior is part of that abusive relationship cycle. The co-dependent relationship between these characters is so dysfunctional. In real life, is worst. I didn‘t like one part at the end which I think was unrealistic. The end? Well I will like to think that there will be hope in this type of relations. But how realistic was the end? I don‘t know. 3.8/4⭐️ 2mo

I can‘t even imagine going through what these families experienced.I was a military wife whose husband was deployed to the Middle East. Many of the occurrences described in this book could have happened.Thankfully they did not.I liked how the husband and wife‘s lives came together in order to get Jolene the help that she needed. This story is inspirational. It talks of deployment from a different angle.Reading it helped me to bette understand PTSD
