pickComplex examination of a family's coming of age. Mirza's novel flows beautifully from time to time, perspective to perspective, crafting a portrait based more on key moments than chronology. The times the characters reach clarity about each other and their relationships are as hopeful as the near misses are despairing. The consideration of faith, of status as second-generation Americans, of how to respond to persecution, is moving and lyrical.
