No spoilers (it is book 2!), but the key is that the parallel stories of Lyra and Gemma can be read in either order, that each complements and enriches the other. Not my favorite by the author (I‘d recommend starting with Before I Fall or the Delirium trilogy) but a compelling, engaging story nonetheless.
