It follows the main characters of her first book in the series, Scorpica, which was one of my 2022 favorites. These women are grappling with the changes happening in the queendoms. As rulers and women of power, they must hold their realms together despite uncertainties. And they each have their own style of completing these tasks. Just as excellent as the first book!

The newest Red Widow mystery is set in a world that is both post-Putin and post-Ukrainian war. It focuses on the relationship of Russia‘s new (and fictional) government with its oligarchs. Lyndsey Duncan finds herself smack in the middle of all the conflict and uncertainty as she works a case with her employer, the CIA.

BarbaraTheBibliophage This isn't being released until mid-March 2023. But I recently read Red Widow and decided I didn't want to wait for book #2. That alone tells you I enjoyed the series!

Also, #sorrynotsorry for dropping a couple of reviews today. I haven't felt like writing lately, but the bug struck me today. #hooray

Every moment of this book is a story with jokes. Along the way, though, Aarons includes poignant moments and plenty of self-discovery. As an early Gen-Xer, I relate completely to her story, despite our differences. Aarons reminded me of how fraught the 1980s were for young women. (Not that it‘s improved!) And she managed to do so while making me laugh at the memories.

CarolynM I can relate to that title🥴 I refuse to identify as baby boomer or gen X - I think there needs to be a separate category for us children of the 60s 1y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @CarolynM I agree!! I was born in the last 6 WEEKS of “Baby Boomers,” and def don‘t fit with the earlier part of the generation. Not quite Gen X either but closer! 1y

Ruth Emmie Lang explores family relationships with a solid dose of magical realism in her new book, The Wilderwomen. It‘s a sweet and engaging exploration of sisterhood and the complications inherent in mother-daughter connections. This is my first venture into the world of Ruth Emmie Lang‘s writing. It won‘t be my last.

Love, love, love this one! I wish there were a *hellzyeah* choice. This one has all the feels and discusses many topics with sensitivity. But at its heart, what matters is that it's a great story with characters I cared about. You'll never know two authors wrote it—they did a seamless job. 5/5 stars

Out tomorrow, so get your library holds started.

Precisely what I expect from writer and historian R. F. Kuang. It‘s complex and highly literate. Plus, the struggle between colonizers and those they oppress is at its core. The characters are well-developed, flawed, and fascinating. And Kuang skewers academia, capitalism, and industry. Most importantly, she builds an alternate reality worthy of the dozens of footnotes.

Woolf‘s marriage wasn‘t perfect, but they stayed together. Then doctors diagnose her husband with stage 4 terminal cancer. What follows is as much about the death as how she reconciles her conflicting emotions. Empowering not tearful.

Wonderful choice if you love woman-centered memoirs that dive deep into emotions and aren‘t afraid to test boundaries of “correctness.”

This focuses on using genetics for good or evil. Main character Logan Ramsay experiences both in the course of the story. It‘s heavy on science and the perfect read for a genetics nerd like me. Modifying DNA, more or less on the fly, is a scary and topical thriller plot line. Still, prepare yourself for extended sequences that read like an Intro to Genetics course. 🧬

Megabooks So excited for this! 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Megabooks It‘s really good. My only regret is that I finished it one or two pages at a time, instead of in a few long and intense sessions. I think the latter would‘ve made it perfect! 2y

This is set in SoCal 1987 and centers at wound a police detective and medical examiner. They‘re investigating a series of diverse crimes that have hate at their core. It‘s heavy and sometimes ponderous. But the issues are just as relevant today as back then. The writing style made it a low pick. And sometimes it was so dark I had to put it aside for a day or so. #thxnetgalley

If you‘re a history / politics wonk / social justice reader, this book is for you! It‘s scholarly and moves slowly, but the value of the analysis and information is priceless. Topic: why Democrats promised “sizzle” for POC and other communities “left behind,” but failed to offer any actual meat / help. 1975 - 2000s

jimfields3 Thanks for sharing! I‘m increasingly interested in policies and what *actually* happens rather than talking points from both sides. More and more I believe both parties are missing the mark as both dig in further into their ideologies. 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @jimfields3 You might really appreciate this. The author does a good job of dialing down her own opinions and perspectives. I‘d guess she‘s actually more progressive in her politics than the policies she describes. 2y
