Wow—I can see why my uncle has been raving about this autobiography for decades! Victor Herman, his parents, brother & sister all left Detroit as part of a 3-year contract his father took to build cars in Russia in the 1930s.It took Victor over 40 years to return to America. Hailed as the Charles Lindbergh of Russia for his piloting, parachute jumps, marksmanship & boxing, his refusal to deny citizenship landed him in prison, then Siberian exile.
First time reading Ketchum and regardless of how you feel about a book like this, it has to be said that Ketchum knows how to tell the story. His sense of tension and pacing is impeccable as well as his ability to invoke time and place. Before I learned this was based on a true story I wondered if it was taking the torture too far. But now I think it was necessary: these were real people who acted on the same depraved depths that are in all of us.
Read for a challenge with a book by a journalist this was .. a lot. Ex marine turned SBS is now trying out life in the security services when he gets pulled into a twisty issue that would have James Bond shaking his head. It moves very fast from cartels to more traditional enemies of the state and ends up in a rush to solve before a terrible attack. For me there was too much h here and it took away from the story⬇️
For so long I thought this was a novel of “lingerie horror,” which I figured was a term I just hadn‘t heard but could figure out what it meant.
No, that word is LINGERING. Which, yes, accurate. This book stuck with me while reading and after finishing. It‘s the kind of thing I usually avoid, the bleak horror I don‘t want to experience, a book that left me crying in bed in the fetal position.
It‘s not a fun read. It‘s powerful.
I founds this quite difficult to get into, it‘s hard going. I enjoy the magical realism genre but it didn‘t really work for me in this one as it dealt with serious subject matter. I found the writing a little ‘flowery‘. On the other hand I did find it interesting as I don‘t know much about the Argentinian ‘Dirty‘ War. So at least I‘ve learnt something! I liked the ending as it was left on a note of hope. I read this with my local book club.
I'm giving this book a read today since it's super short, and I'm having a hard time continuing the 5 other books I've started in the past 3 months 🙃🫠 #thisisadhd
I just listened to a podcast about this case on Morbid, and this memoir was recommended for deeper reading/more depth on the case. So cheers to my Saturday evening of cross stitching and true crime. (And also a couple beers) 🍻
