Once Upon a Time in Hollywood | Quentin Tarantino

Quentin Tarantino's long-awaited first work of fiction -- at once hilarious, delicious, and brutal -- is the always surprising, sometimes shocking new novel based on his Academy Award- winning film. RICK DALTON - Once he had his own TV series, but now Rick's a washed-up villain-of-the week drowning his sorrows in whiskey sours. Will a phone call from Rome save his fate or seal it? CLIFF BOOTH - Rick's stunt double, and the most infamous man on any movie set because he's the only one there who might have gotten away with murder. . . . SHARON TATE - She left Texas to chase a movie-star dream, and found it. Sharon's salad days are now spent on Cielo Drive, high in the Hollywood Hills. CHARLES MANSON - The ex-con's got a bunch of zonked-out hippies thinking he's their spiritual leader, but he'd trade it all to be a rock 'n' roll star. HOLLYWOOD 1969 - YOU SHOULDA BEEN THERE

I‘m confused by the final product of this book. I was definitely interested as I was reading; how could I dislike the novelization of a movie I liked so much written by Tarantino himself? But despite what I liked about it, I can‘t understand why the entire final scene at Rick‘s house isn‘t even in the book. Much of the movie‘s ambiguity about Cliff‘s character is also lost by filling in his entire backstory.

Went out to grab coffee and made myself a breakfast bagel sandwich. Hoping to get some reading in today in between chores (so much laundry 😩).

I originally started reading this while on vacation over New Years but got distracted by other books when I got home. Going to dig back in and plan to finish this month!

vivastory Your sandwich looks amazing! I've been meaning to rewatch the movie and then read the book. 2y
brittanyreads Audiobook laundry saves my life haha 2y
Kimberlone @vivastory thanks it was tasty! I‘m looking forward to rewatching the movie after I finish the book! @BrittanyReads 💯 2y

Not a great reading month for me - I only finished 6 books, and I didn‘t do very well on my bingo card. Both #BookSpin and #DoubleSpin are still on my TBR. I will be keeping all of the #BOTM books from this month for April‘s board too.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Great month!! 2y

March #BookSpinBingo! Most of my options are #BOTM backlist sitting on my physical TBR. I have so many to catch up on and I need to make a concerted effort to clear my shelves. Leaving my free spaces open for library borrows.

My #BookSpin is Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which I started over New Years but got distracted from the last couple months. My #DoubleSpin is In the Weeds, which (as an Anthony Bourdain super fan) I am super excited for.

DogMomIrene What did you use to make this graphic? Looks really cool, like a SMART board kind of vibe🥰🤓 2y
Kimberlone @DogMomIrene it‘s an app for iPad called Paper. There are drawing tools as well as templates like the one I used here. Works best with an Apple Pencil or similar smart stylus. I do all of my reading tracking using the notebooks in this app! (edited) 2y
DogMomIrene @Kimberlone Thanks! Going to go check it out now.🤩 2y

In the airport getting ready to head back home after a week in Phoenix. This is the only reading pic I took while we were in vacation. Unfortunately there were only a couple of pool-worthy days as it was unseasonably cool and rainy. Didn‘t get too much reading done this week, but I did finish about half of this on the sunny days!

Will post my #WinterGames final points tomorrow when I have a chance to do my final tally of bingos, etc.

vivastory I hope you had a nice vacation, despite the lack of pool weather 2y
jewright It‘s negative degrees here with snow. That looks marvelous! 2y
Kimberlone @jewright that is what I am going back to at home so I am still grateful for weather in the 50s/60s! 2y

11-28-21: My 120th finished book of 2021! LA in 1969. Rick Dalton is an actor in westerns and Cliff Booth is his friend and stunt double. Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski live next door to Rick. Charles Manson is trying to find someone to give him a record deal. This book follows the movie but only to a certain extent. And while I liked this, I definitely liked the movie better. It just gives you more story for all. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👍🏼📖#️⃣1️⃣2️⃣0️⃣

When I heard about this book, I knew, I had to read it. Even though I asked myself, if it is really necessary to make a book out of the movie. Maybe it's not necessary, but it sure is a book worth reading! At least if you like Quentin Tarantino.
Because - surprise! - this man can write as well! And the book does, what books can, and movies don't. Getting deep into the characters. ⬇

Jari-chan But also deep into the art of movies. Tarantino writing here, after all. So you better know what you sign up for, when you start reading this book.
I think Tarantino did a great job here. He takes the movie and all that it is, but adds more to it. Therefore, if you're a fan of Tarantino's: here you go.
And: I really love the ending here.

Just finished Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino‘s debut novel.

Good times, adventures, mayhem, and many a hangover await in LA, 1969.

This book greatly expands on the film with much detail & depth, really zooming in on the characters and exploring Cinema & TV history. It‘s fascinating, compelling, & just plain fun—with a few unexpected surprises, some of them very rewarding. Excited to rewatch the movie again now👍

I might be biased because I‘m a huge fan of Sharon Tate, and I absolutely love the movie Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. I jumped to buy this when I saw QT made a novelization based on the movie. I‘d recommend watching the movie first because there are spoilers in the book and it‘s not told in a linear timeline. But I loved this! There are tons of new and expanded scenes in the book and it really does transport you back to the late 60s. We learn ⬇️

JenlovesJT47 Tons more backstory on Cliff Booth and Rick Dalton. I especially love how much detail it goes into about Rick‘s TV pilot for the fictional western Lancer, and I really wish it were a real show. Overall, if you enjoy the movie then I believe you will like the book. It‘s a great snapshot of the 60s and I love the new bits about Sharon Tate. I wish QT would write more books like this! He even published it straight to a mass market paperback ⬇️ 3y
JenlovesJT47 Reminiscent of the era, including advertisements at the end of the book for books that came out in 1969. 5⭐️ Highly recommended! 3y

jdiehr I just loved this book! And the ads in the back - such a great finishing touch 3y
JenlovesJT47 @jdiehr yes!! I confess I bought the kindle edition the day it came out because I was too impatient to wait for the book in the mail! 😆 But I‘ll definitely be adding the physical book to my collection ASAP. I really wanted the audiobook but the reviews for the narrator were terrible, which is a huge bummer. Maybe they‘ll get a new one some day. ❤️ 3y

You guys. I loved this book!

Some of it was straight from the script, but there were lots of tidbits that weren't in the movie:

We find out whether or not Cliff killed his wife ✔

We learn about how Cliff acquired his dog, Brandy ✔

We learn Pussycat's back story ✔

We get to know Trudi, Rick's young co-star (she grows up and gets nominated for her role in a Tarantino movie 😄) ✔

As a fan of OUATIH, I was just thrilled with this book.

Reagan Oooh I have got to order this right away! 3y
jdiehr @Reagan You won't be disappointed 3y
JenlovesJT47 I loved this so much!! I really wish Lancer were a real show with Leo, Timothy Olyphant and Luke Perry (💔). 3y

Mini 4th of July bookhaul from a Barnes & Noble trip with @Saknicole

Loved Tarantino‘s most recent film and have been excited for the release of his novelization of the movie. I love his commitment to the aesthetic of the paperback format! This edition of Leaves of Grass is complemented by beautiful Rockwell Kent illustrations.

It‘s release day for Quentin Tarantino‘s first novel, based on his film, and I am just super interested in what this is even going to be like.

Especially since Tarantino‘s is talking up the possibility of becoming a full-time author after he makes his 10th film and then retires from directing.

Dig that vintage cover!

@vivastory this seems like it might need to be on your radar if it‘s not already.

Kimberlone I can‘t wait to get my hands on this! One of my favorite movie podcasts had a FANTASTIC interview with QT about the movie and novelization. Most recent episode of The Big Picture podcast (released today I think). 3y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Kimberlone Noted! I will definitely listen. Blank Check is my movie podcast of choice. You should check it out, if you haven‘t! 3y
vivastory I heard about this. I'm curious to see what you think about it. I have the feeling that his books will be pretty similar to Elmore Leonard's 3y

Kimberlone @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I only recently learned about Blank Check but have been slowly working my way through the episodes! I just tend to skip around to the directors I‘m most interested in, though. 3y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Kimberlone That‘s exactly what I did what I did when I started too! Love those guys, I just NEED them to do a Wes Anderson series. 3y
Leftcoastzen Love the cover , some old similar Bantam / Pocket Books covers are swirling in my brain. 3y
