I Broke My Trunk by Moe Willems is a Geisel honor book. Its cute and funny and a little ridiculous but entertaining. This is a great read aloud book for k-2nd grade.

J.Cash Some other teaching strategies might be S, IR, CR, and PR. https://www.teachingbooks.net/tb.cgi?tid=28804 #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y

Because of Winn-Dixie is a great story of a girl and her dog. Kate Dicamillo did a awesom job of making an entertaining story that grabs the readers attention. This also grabs the attention of students because it became a movie which is incentive in the classroom to finish books for the reluctant reader.

J.Cash Some teaching strategies that can be used are, RA, AS, IR, GR, LC, and PR. If I were teaching this book i would use mostly group reading or reading aloud so the students can read ot together and discuss. 6y

This isnt your average picture book. This Caldecott award winning book by Molly Idle contains no words at all! But it tells a story nonetheless. This book can inspire students to create a story of their own especially if the struggle with reading and writing.

J.Cash Even though there are no words this book can be taught by RT, DR, and S. http://www.theclassroombookshelf.com/2013/12/flora-and-the-flamingo/ this link has many ideas how to encorperate this book into a classroom with state standards #UCDLAE3414SP18 6y

Funny, original, and creative are ways to describe this book. The day the crayons quit is a good way to put a spin on to everyday classroom life. This book was written by Drew Daywalt and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers. It won a Goodreaders choice award for best picture book.

J.Cash To teach this fiction book I would use RA, S, IR, RT, and PR. Instead of finding a lesson plan I thought I would use my own. I would have the students pick their favorite color crayon and write a letter as the crayon explaining how they feel a about coloring. Then i would have the students switch papers and write a response letter to the crayon letter they recieved. 6y
J.Cash This cpuld also work for EL students but have them write in their language or have them learn all the colors in english as a back up lesson. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y
AndreaG Great idea for a lesson plan, and a good way to make it personal and engaging. 6y

J.Cash This Caldecott winner can be interesting in a class. There are many things that can be done with it. My personal choice would be RA but it can be used in S, IR, CR, and PR. 6y

A very cute modern fantasy is a short and easy book for any elementary school classroom. Go Otto Go has very few words on each page but contains many pictures which will be an any students attention.

J.Cash I would suggest RA, CR, or SR but this book can also be done in IR and PR. A great way to encorperate an English learner is to translate since there are so few words also giving english students a chance to hear another language. 6y

This classic tail is a magical story which can take students to another world if read and taught properly. Roald Dahl did an amazing job with his imagination in this book. The fact that it became a movie just expands the options of teaching this book in a classroom setting.

J.Cash With this modern fantasy there are many strategies tat can go with this book such as RA, LC, IR, SR, and PR. After reading the book i would sughest showing the movie to the class. If not for educational purposes than for reward and entertainment for reading this novel. 6y

The Crossover | Kwame Alexander

A great novel and highly recommended to students. Also recommended as an independent read for reluctant student readers. The poetry involved along with the ups and downs makes this book with the two awards won (Newbery and Coretta Scott King)

J.Cash Though it was recommended to read independently some other ways to use this book is LC, AS, SR, PR. 6y
J.Cash http://poetryforchildren.blogspot.com/2014/08/guide-crossover-by-kwame-alexander... This lesson might help the students as well as the EL students. It explains concepts in the book further and makes students think. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y
paulettevp I would follow all your recommendations. Poetry is a must for me because I read so much of it and I want to share that love for it. All the vocabulary in that guide is great! 6y

The Giving Tree is a picture book that (in my opinion) has a incredible moral to the story. Shel Silverstein did an amazing job and I would most definitely add this to my class library.

J.Cash This tradition literature can be used in many ways in the classroom. Some teaching strategies are RA, S, IR, SR, and GR. Which are mostly group and partner reading. I feel thats important for a book such as this. 6y

Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes | Eric Litwin, James Dean

Pickpick

I Love My White Shoes is a short story of Pete the Cat and his shoes.. They don't stay white the whole story but it doesn't phase Pete one bit. The author Eric Litwin and the music creator James Dean came together to create a fun and engaging series that really capture students attention.

J.Cash Some of the many teaching strategies one can use are RA, S, IR, CR, and PR. Since this book is also based around music and color an EL student should be able to follow along in their own lamguage if not try to follow in English. 6y
ambera I fell in love with Pete when Dr.Spalding read Pete the Cat and his four groovy buttons! I find myself singing the song at work to my coworkers 😂 6y

Hatcht is an inspiring Newbery winner written by Gary Paulson. In my opinion this a book that a lot of students could get into and participate in. It is the story of a young man surviving in the wilderness after an accident and prevailing in the end by being saved.

J.Cash LC, IR, PR, RA, and SR are just a few ways this book can be handled. There many lessons and activities that can go along with this book including simple discussion and annotation which can be useful for an EL student. 6y
J.Cash https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/hatchet-lesson... This lesson plan includes bringing in survival experts to speal to the class which can boost a students desire to read further on the topic. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y

The Snowy Day | Ezra Jack Keats

Panpan

The Snowy day by Ezra Jack Keats is Caldecott award winner but is a simple realistic fiction story. This might be a good addition to a library for reading practice purposes but I would not suggest it for a lesson.

J.Cash If choosen for a lesson I would suggest using it in IR, CR, PR, RA, or SR. This book also comes in spanish so it would be a useful addition to a classroom for EL students. 6y

This Newbery award winning novel by Madeline L'engle is an adventurous story of an out-of-place girl, her quirky intelligent brother, and their goofy friend all looking for the man who did the impossible.

"The Man Who Walked Between The Towers" by Mordicai Gerstein. A great book for students that gives a HF twist to a NF story. Gersteins book won a gold Caldecott award in 2004.

J.Cash I would suggest this book best be taught in partner reading PR or in a read aloud RA. This is a great book to talk about the authors point of veiw and a chance to teach students 4 or 5 words that may be unfamiliar to them. Another way this book can be read is in independent reading IR or is small literature circles LC.

J.Cash All the lesson plans I found I felt did not do justice for this book. I suggest putting emphasis on all the measurements given throughout the book and have the students draw or list something similar to that size, as well as have students create and execute goals the way Philippe did (in a much safer and realistic way for students).
