I thought this book was really funny and adorable. It reminds me of my family and about how close we all are. This book would be good in a classroom when talking about families and maybe summer vacations.

Though this has appeared on banned books‘ lists, I‘m still not quite sure what is objectionable about the book…don‘t get me started on book banning!

When relatives come for the summer, they bring lots of good tidings and fun. The illustrations show happy people doing everything together. I like the color scheme of the images and can see why it is a Caldecott Honor book. #PictureBook #BBRC #LetterR

marleed Oh. I have this book and had no idea it was a banned book - geesh. I guess that means I need too pull it out an read with my grandkids. There‘s another book by this pair called, It‘ll Come A Tide. That story became part of our vernacular while raising my kids! 10mo
Librarybelle @marleed It‘s so bizarre that this was banned! It‘s a fun read 10mo

The Relatives Came by Cynthia Rylant is about a family that came all the way from Virginia and they were visiting their extended family. They traveled in a rainbow-colored station wagon. Once they arrived at the house, they greeted their family members with lots of love. All summer long they took care of their garden that was filled with fruits. When they finally had to leave, they were disappointed they had to say goodbye to their family.

olivia_danko The illustrations are very humorous and keep you entertained throughout the story.
This realistic fiction and award-winning Caldecott book would be best taught using UDL 3.1 (Activate or supply background knowledge) by asking the students to share with the class what they enjoy doing with their family members.
The ELS strategy I'd use is EL 3 (encourage self-talk and positive thinking) because this book talks about spending time with family
3y
olivia_danko and I want students to associate family with positive thinking.

DrSpalding I like that you noted you want to have your students associate family with positive thinking. The humor in this book shows that all families can be very different. Looking at the front cover, you can tell this is not current day therefore it would not be realistic fiction. What genre? 3y

The Relatives Came by Cynthia Rylant with illustrations by Stephen Gammell is a realistic fiction story about a family that goes to visit their extended family during the summer. After driving many long hours from Virginia, the family arrives to embrace their relatives with warm hugs and they spend the entire summer together tending to the garden and being together.

emilypalkovich This Caldecott Honor awarded book would be great if used for independent reading (IR) in the classroom since it is about family and everyone may have personal thoughts on family time and visiting relatives. A website resource that would support independently reading this book would be https://www.ldatschool.ca/independent-reading/. A UDL strategy that would work well for this story is to provide options for perception because all families are 3y
emilypalkovich different and therefore all readers will have a different perspective on the meaning of family time. An EL strategy for this book could be number four, linking the lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge. If EL‘s link ways they spend time with their relatives to the way the characters do in the story, they will have a better understanding of the meaning of family time. #ucflae3414sp21 3y

This F picture book is all about family coming to visit their relatives and explores all the benefits as well as struggles of family in town. This book would be a great RA around holiday time or vacation to remind students that family is for fun and support. It also won a Caldecott award.

AlyssaB An ESOL strategy would be 45 which uses Venn diagram to contrast and compare activities. You could compare and contrast relatives come in to town as good or bad thing. An UDL strategy would be 4.1 which varies the methods for response and navigation. cpalms.org/public/previewresourelesson/preview/62118 #UCFLAE3414F19 5y

The illustrations give a wonderful feeling of warmth and family. The use of colored pencil gives a soft and happy mood to the story. The characters, setting, and plot are all very distinct to Appalachia and the people that live there and I imagine that it‘s a very relatable story for children that love in those areas or even just have big families.
