My boy loved this Sunshine State book. Great for any video game lovers out there. He would gasp, stop reading, and HAVE to tell me what had just happened in the book. I read aloud with him a few times and felt it was really well written, and I enjoyed the story, as well. He‘s excited to read the next 2 in this series. #gamersquad

This boy finished his first Sunshine State Book from the 2020-2021 list. Klawde was funny and had tons of great/challenging vocab without it being too overwhelming for a second grader—well, almost 3rd grader. There‘s not a Reading Counts quiz for this one yet, which is kind of a bummer, but he loved the book. #ssyra #sunshinestatebook #klawdeevilalienwarlordcat

Just awesome. I read all but 2 chapters in 1 day...procrastination is a powerful thing, but really, I couldn‘t put the book down once I got into it. I love all the Greek references and found myself googling them to get more background info. I went back/forth with what I thought would happen. Thought I had it all figured out with 15 pgs left, but was still surprised at the end. So well written & developed. (Definitely an adult read)

Started reading a new (to him) book w/ the boy. He‘s been reading the Dog Man series, but is completely through it. He has another book he is reading on his own, but I‘m letting him pick out books from my class library stash that I think he might enjoy, but that are just a tad above his reading level (aka: read aloud with Mom books). Both the girls read this & liked it when it was a #sunshinestatebook in 2014. He laughed the entire 1st chapter. ❤️

I‘m trying to make progress on my children‘s lit stack. Sooo....10 year old Opal befriends and adopts a stray dog. As a result of her new dog, she finds herself opening up to and learning from folks in her town. She learns grace and finds out about her mom who abandoned Opal and her dad when she was 3. I felt like this was a sweet story with a lot of different learning opportunities.

Wow! Just wow. I knew what apartheid was and knew it was terrible but since it ended around the time I graduated from high school, I never REALLY comprehended what it was like for those living under it. Noah‘s book on his life & growing up under apartheid was just so eye opening to me. What he had to overcome was just insane. Audio book performed by the author was riveting—finished it in just a few days. Adult read: language, situational

Kimberlone I highly recommend his comedy special which treads a lot of the same ground as the book. The story about his parents and his mom is really amazing 5y

Historical fiction, but based strongly on the biography of Pino Lello. This isn‘t my typical pick, but I enjoyed the book. The love story sometimes felt a bit over the top to me. That said, I absolutely love learning about WW2, and this told about the war from the Italian side which I feel is under reported.

One of my son‘s new favorite authors. We bought several of #oliverjeffers books when Kohl‘s was selling them along with matching plush toys. He loves all of them, but asked to read this one before bed tonight. A cute picture book about a boy using unconventional methods to get his kite out of a tree. My son gives this a thumbs up and said, “This is like my 3rd favorite book!” ...

AndreaG Love that the text looks handwritten and even has spots where it looks as if Jeffers crossed out his mistakes. It shows kiddos even the pros make mistakes and that is okay. Love the story, illustrations, and the format of the text. 5y

HF about the lives of African Americans who work in the houses of white women in the ‘60s. I loved how Skeeter fought for the women she documented, & against racism, not only through her writing but also through some of her more sneaky actions. Chapters were written from different characters‘ points of view allowing us to gain a deeper understanding of their lives. This book is in my “faves of all time” stack! Saw movie after...book is way better.

How can anyone not like this classic?! While I knew the story and had seen the movie(s) multiple times, I don‘t know that I‘d ever actually read this book. This was my boy‘s first chapter book that we read together. Love all the opportunities for vocab growth presented in the book without it being too overwhelming for early readers. My boy had already seen the movie and that helped his reading stamina...he knew what was coming...

AndreaG ...and would push through to get to parts he remembered from the movie that he enjoyed. AND even though, he knew how the story ended, I still saw the emotion in him toward the end. Reading a story is just different and awesome. Huge thumbs up. I feel like this is an excellent choice for kids moving from picture books to chapter books. Challenging, but not overwhelming. 5y

This book was odd, much like the main character. I had a really hard time getting in to this book. I couldn‘t identify with Eleanor and, honestly, I didn‘t like her. I listened to this on audio book, and have a feeling if I‘d been actually reading it, I would have quit early on. That said, I did end up enjoying the book. First, I‘ll say that politics will likely determine whether you want to read this book or not. That said, for the most part, I really enjoyed this book. I actually listened to this on audiobook and I really enjoyed hearing Michelle Obama reading it. I always enjoy hearing the author read their book as opposed to another person. I enjoyed the first half of the book more because she really talked about...

AndreaG ...how she grew up, her family, extended family, schooling, and friends. I found her upbringing really interesting. The second half was good, but because it dealt with a lot of politics, I already knew about a of it. It was still good, just didn‘t hold my interest as much as the first half. 6y

It‘s been a long time since I‘ve read a fiction novel that wasn‘t children‘s literature, and I‘m so happy I read this one. This is a touching book about growing up in and coping with isolation. In this book, Pigeon is filthy and reluctant to take a bath, making up countless excuses for why he can‘t take one. He ends up taking and loving the bath, wanting to stay in forever. This F book by Dev Petty is perfect for grades K-2 and would be great for RAs, but could easily be turned into RT for students because of the back and forth dialog in the book. The frog ends up accepting his lot in life when he learns the grass isn‘t always greener and there‘s nothing wrong with being a frog. #ucflae3414sp18

The Crossover is a Newberry Award winning and Coretta Scott King Honor RF novel by Kwame Alexander I would use in grades 3-5 for LCs or RT.
I had little interest in reading this book but fell in love with it. Alexander wrote the novel in poetry format, which makes for an interesting and fast read. The text tells a story about twin boys who both play basketball and live with their school administrator mom & ex-basketball player dad. #ucflae3414sp18

AndreaG The boys deal with basketballs, girls, jealousy, competition, illness, and loss. The symbolism is so well thought out and well written. The books tells a story about children who travel to different dimensions with characters who represent good and evil and a fight to win, at first, freedom for a father, and then a brother. #ucflae3414sp18

AndreaG This was not one of my favorite reads, but as has been discussed many times, we should present all different genres of books as there are students to whom this book will speak. morganhillman This was one of my favorite books growing up! I loved your idea on allowing the kids to come up with their own phrase similar to the book. It‘s a great idea and allows them to be very creative and have fun with it. Great book and lesson plan you added! 7y
ambera I loved these books as a child. I can't wait to introduce these books to my younger students. 7y
erin.yarbrough This one is from my childhood too! 7y
BriannaR Favorite book growing up. Love your choice. 7y
DrSpalding I love the idea of a text innovation; students making their own class book following the style of this author, is a wise choice. 7y
DrSpalding Each of her books make for excellent choices for storytelling as well! What strategy were you thinking? 7y
SadiqaH I like this book because it is great for story telling . 7y
AndreaG @drslalding I was thinking RA, then scaffold to show students what a “If you give me a ____” story would sound like. I‘d have them practice aloud in small groups and them let them branch off independently to write their story. I think this would make text-to-self connections. (edited) 7y

This is a B Caldecott Honor, Coretta Scott King, Orbis Pictus, and a 2001 New York Times Best Illustrated Book Award Winner I would use as a RA to introduce black history & teach the figurative and literal meaning of MLK‘s “big” words and their impact on history. The book follows the life of King from his youth to death, shows life in pre-civil rights South, and discusses the civil rights movement and his impact on that movement. #UCFLAE3414SP18

AndreaG The text also discusses King‘s focus on love and non-violence to accomplish goals. Additionally, MLK quotes are provided throughout the book. I would use this to teach about black history. UDL 3.1 is provided in this text. ELL strategies 4, 5, 14. http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/martin-words-thin... (edited) 7y
DrSpalding Make sure your resource hyperlinks. This book has won so many awards and you are wise to include it in a resource for Black history month. Well done. 7y
AndreaG @DrSpalding Any time there‘s a # in the link, it doesn‘t hyperlink. I think it‘s because Litsy thinks it‘s a hashtag. I had this happen with another link, too. 7y
DrSpalding Thanks for letting me know! 💜📚 7y

This book is a New York Times Best Selling humorous F picture book I would use for RT or DR to enhance fluency and introduce vocabulary used within the book. I would also incorporate cause and effect lesson to ensure comprehension. The text will induce laughter as students learn about how much dragons love tacos, how much they hate spicy salsa, and the consequences of eating spicy salsa. #UCFLAE3414SP18

AndreaG The pre-K - 2nd grade text uses UDL 2.1 through picture and text clarification of vocabulary. ELL strategies 6, 14, 16 https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/309024/dragons-love-tacos-by-adam-rubin... (edited) 7y
Hervela.L I need to read this book for sure. I first hear of it in class as a book boost. I love your post a lot Andrea. Great job! 7y
Noelle5 This book seems so silly and I definitely want to get my hands on it. As teachers we need some silly, funny, cute books in our classrooms to read at the end of the day. This book is perfect for that! 7y
DrSpalding Dramatic reenactment, read aloud, or readers theater honestly would work well for this bestseller. 7y

This Orbis Pictus award winner NF text would be used for RA for a math measurement lesson. It engages students, grades K-3, with realistic illustrations of life-sized animals allowing for compare/contrast of text-self. Measurements given about animals would help in math lessons. UDL 2.3 is provided through math data & excerpts for animals. http://www.brighthubeducation.com/lesson-plans-grades-1-2/128829-2nd-grade-measu... #UCFLAE3414SP18

morganhillman I did my read aloud on this book and loved it! It‘s very engaging for students to learn about some new and some old animals and their sizes! The math measurement lesson plan is a great one for students to get excited about! 7y
JenniferMc I loved this book. The students are amazed at the “ actual size” of eyeballs and hands of the animals listed. This can be used as a great lesson for math or science. 7y
DrSpalding Be sure your post includes all the necessary elements noted in the rubric. Anytime a book can help you teach math skills, it‘s a winner! 7y
AndreaG I would use this book as a RA and lead into a math and science lesson about the measurements and animals in the book. ELL 14, 17, 29. UDL 7.2, 8.2, 1.2 7y
