Deeply depicts our innate need to be loved and accepted and the crushing disappointment when love is lost or never fully realized. Each novel uniquely reveals the struggles of relationships which remain true to this day. Highly recommend!

The Talented Mr. Ripley | Patricia Highsmith
Mehso-so

Reviews of this novel often describe 2 sides of Mr Ripley - one that is human and likeable and the other that is dark and despicable. The novel is mostly driven by Ripley‘s paranoia and fear of being caught. And while his internal struggles are real and understandable I could not find any sympathy for him. I also found it implausible that other characters did not draw suspicions of Mr Ripley. In this respect his talents seem overly contrived.

Cloud Cuckoo Land | Anthony Doerr
Pickpick

Wonderful read on the power of a story that can survive war and destruction - crossing cultures and generations to bring hope in dark times. The novel is constructed in a way that leaves cliffhangers throughout - unique for this era of binge-watching streaming! Also drives home the importance of preserving stories for future generations. Highly recommend!

TheKidUpstairs I keep forgetting that this one is out. (So many books, so little time!) Great review! 2y

Hamnet | Maggie O'Farrell
Pickpick

Heart wrenching depiction of loss of a child who happens to be the son of William Shakespeare. O‘Farrell‘s descriptive prose brings everything to life and places the reader squarely in the middle of the landscape and narrative. Highly recommend though as a parent difficult to read at times.
