"Art, though, is never the voice of a country; it is an even more precious thing, the voice of an individual, doing its best to speak, not comfort of any sort, but truth. And the art that speaks it most unmistakably, most directly, most variously, most fully, is fiction; in particular, the novel."
Very artistic portrait in words. If you are looking for a quick, easy read, this is NOT your book. But if you're up for a bit of a challenge and you appreciate creative leaps, you will be glad you finished. Overall, it is an intimate and provocative look into one unusual marriage that felt deliciously voyeuristic and emotionally heartrending to read.
Well, that's one way to deal with grief... 😂 Interesting character, Mathilde.
Noticed some similarities between my novel, Finding Tranquility Base, and The Silent Wife. Not only does the protagonist take really hot baths to keep herself from feeling, this passage about truth jumped out at me as eerily familiar, not just in meaning but in rhythm as well.
It took me some time to get into the rhythm of the writing of this book, but I appreciate the research that must have gone into it, as well as the "feel" of living in downtown Chicago. The ending was somewhat predictable, but then this is really more a psychological study than a crime thriller.
This book was interesting enough for me to finish, but I found the story disappointing overall. A little far fetched and disjointed. Plenty of interesting parts, that didn't add up at the end. Loved The Time Traveler's Wife tho. 🤓
I really enjoyed this book. It's not so much a page turner as a character study. Mary Gaitskill writes beautifully and insightfully. The relationship between girl and horse is a powerful metaphor. And the insights into art, addiction and relationship ring so very true.
