Button Up!: Wrinkled Rhymes | Alice Schertle, Petra Mathers

Pickpick

This P book showcases an adorable and humorous collection of poems all centered around different items of clothing. I'm sure it would be fun to read aloud with students and it's also great for teaching about point of view and voice. A worksheet that helps teach about voice can be found here: https://www.teachervision.com/viewpdf/Mzk4ODAtZmllbGRfcHJpbnRhYmxlX2ZpbGU%3D #UCFLAE3414su17

DrSpalding Voice is vital! Looks like a great book to assist kids in enjoying rhythm and rhyme! Is it an anthology @SamanthaPuglisi? 7y
StephanieP Seems like a fun book for students ! Can definitely read a loud to students in the class or create fun activities ! 7y

This B book is part of an awesome series called Ordinary People Change the World. It tells an important biographical story, but the images and comic book style make it fun for kids. This can hit ELA, SS, and STEM standards all in one! I love the idea of reading this during an aviation stem unit. Lesson plan on paper planes/ what makes planes fly here: http://www.smartspaceniu.com/just-plane-awesome-learning-what-makes-planes-fly/ #UCFLAE3414su17

DrSpalding Love the series. Love the resource! STEM additions to your classroom library are a must! 7y
Jerricajay I've heard such great things about this series, I can't wait to add it to my classroom library one day! 7y

This NF book is so fun but also jam packed with information! It discusses different animals & the style & function of their hair. Because kids are egocentric they ❤️ picturing animal hair on themselves. This would be great to use in a science unit- it's part of a series that also includes animal ears, teeth and more! Activity here: http://dailylearningtothecore.blogspot.com/2014/02/what-if-you-had-animal-hair-w... #UCFLAE3414su17

DrSpalding This books looks like it would inspire creativity and a text innovation! 7y
StephanieP I love this book! It definitely something to keep into the classroom library or even for a read aloud! 7y

We Found a Hat | Jon Klassen
post image
Pickpick

If you want to laugh all the way through a book, this F story by Jon Klassen is the way to do it. In this comical book, there are two turtles and only one hat. It would not be fair if only one of them gets the hat... I'll let you read the rest! An awesome teacher's guide for the entire hat trilogy can be found here: http://www.candlewick.com/book_files/0763656003.btg.1.pdf #UCFLAE3414su17

Chanelamber I can tell that this book is a funny one! I also like the link that you attached to this post - it seems like it will be awfully helpful in the classroom! Thanks for sharing. 😌 7y
DrSpalding You did Klassen proud today @SamanthaPuglisi! I hope everyone considers his books for their classroom libraries! 7y

This HF is about 3 preteen friends and how they navigate through the hardships of life together & prepare for a beauty pageant. This story takes place in Central Florida which makes it interesting & relatable to readers. Although the book was cute, I personally found it to be slow and got bored with parts but it was still good book. A group discussion guide found here: http://www.candlewick.com/book_files/0763681172.bdg.1.pdf #UCFLAE3414su17

Elizabethhunt96 It's a shame it's slow. Can I ask why you particularly thought so? The topic sounds really interesting to me and I like that it takes place in central Florida! (edited) 7y
SamanthaPuglisi @Elizabethhunt96 I thought the topic was interesting as well and was so excited to read the book but as the chapters progressed I just found the story to be slow and dry. It may have just been that the author's particular style didn't click with me, but my group members had similar feelings. It wasn't a bad book by any means I just wouldn't ever assign it as a class reading because I don't think that it would be engaging enough. 7y
DrSpalding I am picked upon then discussion guide at ILA on Sunday. I agree with your comments @SamanthaPuglisi as I felt the same way while reading this title. 7y

This is Not My Hat | Jon Klassen
post image
Pickpick

This is another great F book with stunning illustrations. Although this book is comical, it actually can be a stepping stone into complex concepts such as stealing & consequences. What I love about this book is that the ending is left open for interpretation, which could be a great writing prompt for students to create their own ending. Discussion points here: https://www.teachingchildrenphilosophy.org/BookModule/ThisIsNotMyHat #UCFLAE3414su17

Elizabethhunt96 I like your idea for a writing prompt!! 7y
DrSpalding Using this to lead into a writing lesson is wise! This is part of a trilogy of HAT books! 🎩 7y
melissaallam I've added this to my stack! Books with humor are always a win with children. (edited) 7y

After doing my author's study on Jon Klassen, he quickly became one of my favorite authors/illustrators. The images in this F book that he created are breathtaking and the storyline is light hearted, frustrating, and hilarious. You can find some classroom resources for this book here: http://www.candlewick.com/book_files/9999999911.kit.13.pdf #UCFLAE3414su17

DrSpalding I picked up the hat trilogy resource at ILA! Klassen is amazing! 7y
SamanthaPuglisi I've noticed that Candlewick has really amazing resources for teachers to use and they are so easy to find! I will certainly be pulling their materials for my classroom! @DrSpalding 7y
DrSpalding Agreed. Be sure to share this in your author study presentation @SamanthaPuglisi 7y

Pickpick

As with most books by Mo Willems, the Knuffle Bunny (RF) is a humorous & fun book that will definitely engage students. The storyline of a child losing their favorite stuffed animal is something all children can relate to. The images in the book are very cool, mixing up animated drawings with b&w photos. Lesson plan here: https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/knuffle-bunny-... #UCFLAE3414su17

DrSpalding Excellent comments paired with an excellent resource. Scholastic being the largest producer of children's books, is a quality source to utilize with quality children's literature. 7y

Penny and Her Marble | Kevin Henkes
post image
Mehso-so

This sweet animal fantasy (F) book is a great beginning chapter book for students. Chapters are short and easy to read and a great stepping stone into more difficult chapter books. The book follows Penny on a journey with her marble and teaches readers about having a good conscience. Discussion questions and classroom activities here: http://www.icanread.com/printables/penny-marble-teachers-guide/ #UCFLAE3414su17

DrSpalding Being that Henkes also writes for older children, I agree with your comment! He's an award winner and children enjoy his mice characters! ❤️📚 7y

This NF book tells the story of 2 animals with stubby tails & how they survived Hurricane Katrina. Bobcat is blind & Bobbie is her seeing eye dog. After getting left behind, they survive on their own for months until they find a furr-ever home. This heart warming book would be great to tie into a unit on weather/ hurricanes. Classroom activities found here: https://media.bloomsbury.com/rep/files/twobobbiesclassroomactivities.pdf #UCFLAE3414su17

DrSpalding What a resource! It also could be used in a five senses science lesson according to the second idea on the guide. Quality book! Love the image!❤️🐕🐈 7y
Diana_S This looks so sweet I love this picture! I really want to read this book and you are right, this would be great for hurricane and storm lessons we would teach our students and how to prevent things like this, losing pets and loved ones, from happening. 7y

The Crossover | Kwame Alexander
post image
Pickpick

The Crossover (RF) was such a smooth & interesting, novel that once I picked it up I couldn't put it down. Following the story of 2 teenage twins, this coming of age novel highlights adolescence, family, relationships, & chasing dreams. It's a great way to show the power & depth of poetry in a way that most students wouldn't expect. Reading guide for educators here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-e2daE0hoOBd0ViWUNsS2lmLUE/view #UCFLAE3414su17

DrSpalding Your comments are thoughtful and well written. I am happy you found this to be a smooth read. Being appropriate for third grade and up, I hope you'll consider this one in your own classroom. 7y
Ashleywwolfe I seriously ❤️ this book, which I was t expecting because of the layout- but it added so much! I am keeping this one for students at an upper elementary read, and I really think the boys will connect to this one. 7y
