The Kiss of Deception | Mary E. Pearson

Pickpick

I've been too busy to even open Litsy in months (we all know what a glorious time suck it can be!), but I just finished this book and HAD to post. Action, adventure, rebellion, non-smarmy love triangle, deception, grief, friendship, and much more. Very much loved this book! (Posting it here so I can look for the sequel later - if there is one which I haven't even researched yet, that's how compelled I was to post right this moment)

Karenmyers Yes!!! Sequel is Heart of Betrayal 8y

I love the premise of the series, but this is too plot-heavy for me. Constantly having to keep track of who is playing which side and who cannot be trusted gets tiresome. I like the characters, but the continuous internal questioning tends to get on my nerves.

A must read if you like suspenseful witchy magic with intense characters and world-building so great that you wish you could visit! There is a slight love interest, but not in the conventional, angsty and predictable way it usually plays out. Really, truly one of the best I've read in a while.

As I hurtle towards the end of this book, I had to have something to crunch on to relieve the tension. SO, SO, SO very many other things I should be doing right now! #notsorry #pitachipstotherescue

"In her world, she'd been loved - by her sister, her mother, and even her Tristan - but Lily had never been necessary." It's out of context here, but this on p. 277 is a mind-blowing description of the difference between familial love & relationship love. If that makes no sense, read this book!

Don't you just hate when you have more miles left than book!?! If I had known I was going to love this book so much, I'd have grabbed the next in the series as well. Sigh

Mccall0113 Speed limit of 85!!!??? 8y
BookFreakOut @Mccall0113 Ha, that's what I was thinking! At least you'll get to somewhere you can get the next book faster than our 75 limits! 8y

What a phrase! "She shouldn't want to wear Rowan like a pair of pants, or swallow him like a mouthful of chocolate. It just wasn't right." Really loving this mash-up of YA sci-fi, dystopian, fairy tale, action, etc.! (Please excuse my ineloquence. I've only had a couple sips of coffee so far.)

Loved her Starcrossed series so I'm giving this a try. Liking it so far; reminds me of that tv series Sliders from years and years ago. I love the concept of parallel universes and who we might be in each!

A unique YA murder mystery that doesn't take itself too seriously and is not too predictable. Well-written but not overly dense. A perfect cutesy easy read that isn't like anything else!

Just starting this one. So far, so good. Reminds me a lot of Cabot's Mediator series which is great (I rarely read entire series, but loved every last one of the Mediator ones!). Short, mindless, entertaining YA is just what I need right now.

Giving this a whirl in hopes that it will break my slump! "You wouldn't think there is anything life threatening about speech impediments, but let me tell you, there is nothing more dangerous than being a kid with a stutter and a lisp." ?

Riveted_Reader_Melissa The audiobook for this is pretty excellent too, if the book doesn't pull you out of your slump. 8y

I'm in a reading slump, so take this with a grain of salt! The audiobook narrator was ok, only slightly annoying. I love learning about living with illnesses and this book delivered! I was irritated that Caroline was so flat, but all was revealed and ok. I love the idea of a secret writing room!!!

I really tried to stick with this! The smart writing & amazing phrases kept me to the half-way mark, but I just didn't give a damn about any of the characters. Who is crazier? The protagonist stalker, shallow lying antagonist female, the stalker bff? Who the hell cares? I tried but couldn't. 😢

"What's the only thing more sexless than lunch? Brunch, a meal invented by rich white chicks to rationalize day drinking and bingeing on French toast." The writing is so smart! I am not a big fan of creepy books, but I am sticking with this one because it's full of sentences like this one!

Quote is from my 16 year old son who got into my car while this audiobook was playing: "Exactly what the hell are you listening to?" I plan on finishing this because I have a long drive coming up soon, but the book is mostly world-building, character development, and lusty snogging.

Karenmyers ETA: The reason he said that is that this book has many lengthy, drawn out parts where the young innocent protagonist discovers that she enjoys kissing. She describes it very graphically while evaluating her feelings at length using very active verbs! 8y

This statement on the otherwise not very well-written book flap makes some big promises. I'll give it a try but am not very optimistic at this point. Any words of encouragement?

JennyTheBish Loved this book and joes twisted character. Enjoy. 8y

Blackass: A Novel | A. Igoni Barrett

I loved it in the beginning but couldn't finish it. It never seemed to go anywhere and there were too many convenient coincidences that drove the plot. The writing was great and I loved reading the rich descriptions of life in Nigeria but I just couldn't stay interested enough to finish it.

I've never seen the tv show; liked the book. Not to terribly much happened in the first book as it was mostly world-building. I like the complexity of the character relationships and the premise. The cliff hanger means I'll probably grab the next book when I need a mindless quick read.

Best audiobook I've listened to in a long time!!! Written by a Project Runway finalist about her life with lots of kids in Manhattan, the anecdotes had me rolling and the way she described her irreverent parenting style left me wishing I was her neighbor so we could hang out!

"But Bellamy had been doing stupid things his whole life, and he had no intention of stopping now." Liking this book so far. (Have never seen the tv series so I can't compare the two.)

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I've read the first book and watched the first 2-3 seasons of the show. Book one is close, but close to maybe the first few episodes of the show. It just takes off on the action side much faster in the series. 8y

I'm usually a straight-up YA reader. It got this audiobook for free at a conference and it was amazing! Just when I started to hate the main character for being whiny or stupid, she would do or say something that made her actions reasonable. The author did a great job with multiple perspectives. ❤️

I get so tired of people today throwing their hands in the air and complaining; this was a nice break from the victim mentality. Adelaide fought hard and never lost sight of who she is. I enjoyed the beautifully written journey of self-discovery and self-reliance.
