GingerAntics I‘m having the hardest time finding a replacement copy of Maus. I‘ve added several of the books on this list to my wish list, too. 2y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I know several of the Jewish museums were selling it online -that‘s what I did just so I could have another copy. I‘m just leaving school because SNOW and unsafe roads but that is an option! 2y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I hadn‘t thought of going through one of the museums. I think I got my first one off Amazon… or was it the college bookstore? I can‘t remember. It was the all college read one year I was in school. 2y

Dounia tells her granddaughter about what she and her family went through as Jews under Vichy, when France was occupied by nazi Germany: her parents were sent to the camps, while she was picked up by the neighbours who looked after her and hid her until the end of the war. This graphic novel is a very good introduction to the history of Vichy to young children.

#WWII #GraphicNovel

Dilara I thought it was very well pitched, intellectually and psychologically, for children. But it is affecting - there is no way it cannot be given the subject matter - and I would never leave it for children to discover on their own: there should be an adult ready to answer their questions and reassure them. 2y
Chrissyreadit I am thinking about this, and feeling sad with the world, because the reassurance cannot be “it won‘t happen again” but rather” I will do my best to protect you” I thought we would be a better world but am disheartened by so much right now. 2y
Dilara @Chrissyreadit Yes. Thinking about this is not good for our anxiety levels. There are too many parallels between the interwar years and where we are now. And in France, ultra-rightists and fascists have been crawling out of the woodwork. They're also trying to push their twisted version of history, and are claiming that the Vichy government actually protected Jews (or at a minimum French Jews, which in their minds are the only ones worth saving?) 2y
Chrissyreadit @Dilara I was not aware of how current the situation is in France. I don‘t understand how all of this right wing propaganda has gained so much momentum- and you‘re also right- the anxiety about it has been high on my end. 2y

Very sad what happened to Dounia‘s family at such a young age and what she and many others had to endure. It was a great GN that showed her experience as a young child during WWII, and an even better story as she was explaining her secret to her granddaughter. It was very touching and I‘m glad to have read it.

This graphic novel was on my list for a couple of years now and I finally had the chance to get it and read it. An emotional story of a grandmother who finally breaks her silence about her experiences during the Nazi occupation of France.

#fallintobooks #lesserknowncomics

I don't know many comics but I do know this moving graphic novel about a granddaughter who learns about the Holocaust through her grandmothers experience is worth a read.

#Reading this during nap time today! Hidden is a graphic novel about a grandmother's recollection of the Nazi invasion in France during #WW2 when she was a little girl. Side note: I love panels of seasons!! #fridayreads #kidlit #history

How do you write a meaningful and accessible children's book about the Holocaust? Ask Loic Dauvillier; better yet, just read it. Haunting in an altogether different way.
