I shouted at this book on the final page and that‘s when you know you‘ve come to care about the characters! I loved learning about Greek mythology through this retelling as it‘s new to me. I really enjoyed this novel but only got into it when I attempted it for a second time; if you don‘t know much about myths, stick at it as it‘s so worth it once you‘re absorbed in the story!

It took me a while to decide I liked Eleanor, just like her colleagues (although I like to think I was less judgemental). I found the mirroring of the reader‘s response in the characters‘ responses really powerful. I love the idea of being ‘shiny‘ and I will take that, and the empathy shown by Raymond and Sammy‘s family, forward into my life.

A devastating but understated ending that left me scrabbling for something uplifting. Loved the bond between the two boys but found it a bit unemotional at the end, which was surprising as a result of the content.

I found this novel a bit of a slow burner; I wasn‘t so hooked that I had to read on until the last few chapters. However, the final twists and turns and the emotional connection I felt with the detective, Murray, meant that I really did enjoy the story overall.

Attenborough really does take you along on his adventures with his charming turn of phrase and absolute stoicism in the most uncomfortable circumstances. A brilliant non-fiction read.

I read this all in one day even though I‘m not sure I hate my job!
The approachable tone and clear structure (if slightly repetitive on occasion but that may have been amplified because I read it in one go!) made me think about why I do what I do and gave me practical tips of what I could do to change it.
Now I‘m trying to choose who to send it on to...

Whilst I don‘t usually enjoy novels told from multiple perspectives, the necessity of the narrator change in this emotive novel worked for me. I really wanted to discover the ending but I was sad as it inevitably approached. A surprising, engaging and thought-provoking read.
