Adventures of a Young Naturalist
Adventures of a Young Naturalist: The Zoo Quest Expeditions | David Attenborough
15 posts | 10 read | 25 to read
In 1954, a young television presenter was offered the opportunity of a lifetime - to travel the world finding rare and elusive animals for London Zoo's collection, and to film the expeditions for the BBC. His name was David Attenborough, and the programme, Zoo Quest, not only heralded the start of a remarkable career in broadcasting, but changed the way we viewed the natural world forever. Written with his trademark wit and charm, Adventures of a Young Naturalist is not just the story of a remarkable adventure, but of the man who made us fall in love with the natural world, and who is still doing so today.

My last read of May was simply wonderful! The #ReadAroundTheWorldChallenge country was #Guyana (though there are sections on #Indonesia and #Paraguay) and in the 1950s, Attenborough traveled to the remote parts of the globe to film and collect animals for his BBC program, Zoo Quest. You can hear Attenborough‘s distinctive voice & sheer joy & wonder leap off the page! This provides a window into the past in a fascinating manner! Includes photos!

Bookzombie OMG, are the plastic animals from your childhood or do you have a zoo near your that still does them? I went to our zoo a month or so ago and they didn‘t have those machines. #nostalgia 10mo
rockpools Oh that sounds wonderful! Good find! 10mo

TorieStorieS @Bookzombie The zoos around me still have these machines as Mold-A-Rama is a Chicagoland company! But two of these three are indeed relics of my childhood— the Komodo dragon is a bit more recent from a trip to the zoo about six years ago! 10mo
TorieStorieS @rockpools I really loved it!! 10mo
TorieStorieS @BookwormM Thank you for organizing this challenge!! 10mo
Bookzombie @TorieStorieS I didn‘t know the name of the company. Thank you! 10mo
TorieStorieS @Bookzombie No problem! Chicago‘s Museum of Science and Industry has a special exhibit featuring Mold-a-Rama right now! I can‘t wait to go! I think it lasts through the summer! 10mo

Fascinating details of the process DA went through to get his tv programme Zoo Quest. As this was in the 1950s, it is a window into another world hard to recognise as our own. I did find the details of animal capture disturbing and difficult to read. However, DA love and respect for animals shines throughout.

‘“It's easy,” I said to Daan that evening. “We fly to Macassar, connect with a plane to Maumere, discover our Chinese friend's brother-in-law, hire a lorry, drive two hundred miles to the other end of Flores, find a canoe or something, cross the five-mile strait to Komodo and then all we have to do is to catch our dragon”.‘

My anxiety could never.

It‘s hard for me to review this book since it goes against all my beliefs. I especially hated the buying of animals from dealers and people around the world. Times were different then, I know. Attenborough has evolved since. The book is easy to read, but creepy in a way that the only thing that really matters is that white people can do whatever they want to do wherever they want to. Flying around the world catching wildlife for a zoo - not cool!

MommyWantsToReadHerBook I felt the same when reading Gerald Durrell recently. Although then he did explain about preserving endangered species (from the perspective of 50, 60 years ago) 4y

What do you mean David Attenborough was once young?!
Its strange seeing him young.

GingerAntics That is an interesting picture. He‘s been old since the 70s, hasn‘t he? 5y
BookishRedhead @GingerAntics must be around that sorta time. 5y

Attenborough really does take you along on his adventures with his charming turn of phrase and absolute stoicism in the most uncomfortable circumstances. A brilliant non-fiction read.

New David Attenborough book coming out this Christmas! It's soooo good, if you like nature and Attenborough (who doesn't?) read it!! His diaries from his years as an exploring journalist for the BBC are hilarious and fascinating.

rabbitprincess OMG I am buying this for my best friend. Thank you for posting about it! She will LOVE it. 7y
