A Curse So Dark and Lonely | Brigid Kemmerer

Romance was a feature in this book, however, it didn‘t take it over which I loved. There were multiple separate plot line which made the romance not feel overwhelming. However, I did wish that Harper‘s love interest weren‘t so focused on one person, it was almost too obvious. The ending of this book was a little disappointing compared to the rest of the book. This leads to a sequel but I felt as if I wasn‘t left with enough questions to read on.

I fell for the characters; Lira especially and I respected her. She was put in situations and her actions allowed for my respect to grow for her and I think that‘s an important relationship to have with the characters of a book. The plot was diverse and full of plot twists so I was never bored. I wish there was more description in the action scenes. We are told what happened but I needed emotions and a description of the physical reactions

I was so hooked that I stayed up until 1:30 reading which is late for me! I know there were 3 other books in the series and I‘m super excited to see where they lead to, I simply can‘t imagine.
I also loved the writing style. It was easy to read but not too simple that I got frustrated.
The plot line was flawless, I wasn‘t expecting all the turns of events which made them a wonderful (yet scary!) surprise. 5/5 stars!

BethM I waited a long time to read this and then wondered why I did! Soooo good! 6y

The characters were so alive, but I couldn‘t say that I liked them because I believe it was the authors intention to make you not like them. They‘re manipulating, cruel and dirty and I love them! The story line as well was not what I had expected.
Admittedly, I think the book could have been shorter and it spent a lot of time on their daily routine, however, when something happened, it was always unexpected.
I am going to rate it a 5 out of 5

When I started reading this book, I was very intrigued as I love a good retelling book, however I just could not get into it at all! The writing style was great, and I could see the book leading into an interesting direction but I just could not connect with the characters and to me, that‘s a very important part of the book. I definitely implore you all giving it a try but unfortunately this book wasn‘t for me.

It was an interesting dark take on how Alice in Wonderland is viewed.
The writing style is good and sentence structure is pleasant to read which encourages me to read on as I can become more engaged in the story.
Alice is a very likeable character so I sympathise with her which makes me feel more involved with the book. There is also quite a few surprise turn of events and how Alice deals with these seems very rationally and understandable.

tpixie @BrainyHeroine loves retellings too, I believe. Welcome to Litsy! 🥳📚🥳 6y
readinginthedark How interesting that Alice is likable in a dark retelling! She's kind of a brat in the original. 😆 6y

In my eyes, this is a very well presented book that I thoroughly enjoyed. I found that the characters were relatable and I would get along with them well should they be real people which made me feel compassionate. However, I didn‘t feel a connection to them which is a little disappointing.
The writing style was easy to follow but not simple, I was able to read fast and enjoy the book without getting frustrated with the grammar.

I am so in love with this book; the characters, the storyline, the changes in perspective, the drama, everything!

Overall this book was amazing and I recommend it 100%. It‘s a type of book you would read if you want to get emotionally invested and really stuck-in. I would say this book is best for 15+ readers but it really depends on your maturity as there are a few graphic scenes in the book.

The plot line of this story is brilliant and well thought out.

However, a real downside is the writing style. I really struggled to read it because it is clearly aimed at younger children. I feel like the sentences and grammar let the story down because it was so simple.

This book is suitable for young readers (under the age of 13, I'd say) and I think it would be a very good read but personally, I didn't enjoy the book.

The characters are well developed and I enjoyed developing and learning with Clary. I felt like Clary accepted this new world too easily. I gave this book 3 stars simply because it was a lot to get through. There was so much information and detail crammed in I just didn't feel that into it. Personally, I don't want to continue on with the series but I definitely think you should give this book a go before making your mind up about not reading it.
