Almost a year to the day since I started the powder mage trilogy, I‘m starting it again, but this time I‘m bringing the book club with me. And I love this opening scene. Hello, Adamat!!

Pickpick

An enjoyable read, but one must appreciate 60‘s & 70‘s sci-fi to really enjoy it. While reading, it‘s very easy to tell that Niven has an excellent understanding of astrophysics and has given a lot of thought to the requirements and consequences of various theories and concepts.
I‘m tickled pink that ringworld theories in science are called “Niven Rings” because the work Larry put in to this book certainly begs that sort of honor. 3.75/5 stars.

Done, but as meager in its satisfaction as the entire series. Every one of the seven is somewhere between 2-2.5 stars. It wasn‘t a waste of time to read them, but I shan‘t be rereading it ever and I‘ll never tell anyone that they *must* read the series as I would Fionavar Tapestry or Locke Lamora. 🧐

It‘s far more than my strong dislike for Si King‘s EXTREME hubris in writing himself as central to the story (Every Universe‘s fate depends on him?

I will see this series out, but I don‘t think I‘ll ever wish to reread it. Just not as impressed with it as many seem to be.

I can‘t stand it when an author writes themselves as a character in their stories. More so when they are the focus of whole chapters, not just a two line cameo. This was a two-star book at best.

📖 Words of Radiance - Brandon Sanderson 1,083 pages or Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand 1,084.
📖 Epics, pls. 800-900 pgs is wonderful.

📚 I learned to read from the King James Bible, but it was The Chronicles of Narnia & The Hobbit that hooked me for life.

Jenni_Capps Great answers! I‘m from South Carolina so sweet tea is always available! 6y

In 1987 & in the 1964 of this book, I'm sure blatant racism was as big an issue as it seems in in this novel. I'm sure disassociative personality disorder can be just as disgusting & heartbreaking as it is shown here. Doesn't mean I needed hours of it as part of this cocaine-and-Xanax fueled, weird-ass plot. #donotrecommend

Library gives you only 8 days to finish an audiobook before it expires. This book has a hold list 28 people deep.
I waited 6 weeks to get it & it expired when I was an hour from the end. So frustrating. Glad Wikipedia could sum it up for me.

First Reread complete. The Stormlight Archive books 1&2 were the first Brandon Sanderson I'd read, so I read all 7 Mistborn books, Elantris, Warbreaker, White Sand (Pt. 1) and all of the Short stories & Novellas before returning to #Roshar with the GRT Geeks Book Club. Still wonderful, though I think #Warbreaker or #AlloyOfLaw may be my favorite #Cosmere book now. #EpicWithinAnEpic

Pickpick

Guy Gavriel Kay wrote the Fionavar Tapestry as if it was a prime World that echos or causes echos of myth and Lore in similar worlds.
Thus his world is strongly similar to Tolkien's First Age & Poul Andersen & Tailesen & Arthurian Legend.

That said, he has a beautiful writing style of High Fantasy reminiscent of Tolkien (and since GGK was a editor on the Lost Tales it's no surprise.)

"Nor mine," said Philip with a wink at his apprentice.

An Insult to Professional & Amateur Authors
My book club owes me for time and money on this. 10 have finished so far and the average rating is ONE STAR.

The writing is elementary, the plot is a straight line (descending in quality & ingenuity), repeated disgusting digressions into ways that sex with underaged/young teen girls might be justifiable in an apocalyptic scenario.

This was the worst book we've read in several years. Take a hard pass.

quote
Midnightyell

Pg. 163 – "Awkwardly, they turned, hobbling and stumbling and groaning. It seemed quite ludicrous; heroes in stories never got hurt so they could barely stand."

It's a bit cliché, but always amusing when a story's protagonists think about how they're going through some indignity that never happens in stories. ?
