Words of Radiance
Words of Radiance | Brandon Sanderson
Brandon Sanderson's The Stormlight Archive sequence began in 2010 with the New York Times bestseller The Way of Kings. Now, the eagerly anticipated Words of Radiance continues the epic story and answers many of your questions.Six years ago, the Assassin in White, a hireling of the inscrutable Parshendi, assassinated the Alethi king on the very night a treaty between men and Parshendi was being celebrated. So began the Vengeance Pact among the highprinces of Alethkar and the War of Reckoning against the Parshendi. Now the Assassin is active again, murdering rulers all over the world of Roshar, using his baffling powers to thwart every bodyguard and elude all pursuers. Among his prime targets is Highprince Dalinar, widely considered the power behind the Alethi throne. His leading role in the war would seem reason enough, but the Assassin's master has much deeper motives.Expected by his enemies to die the miserable death of a military slave, Kaladin survived to be given command of the royal bodyguards, a controversial first for a low-status "darkeyes." Now he must protect the king and Dalinar from every common peril as well as the distinctly uncommon threat of the Assassin, all while secretly struggling to master remarkable new powers that are somehow linked to his honorspren, Syl.Brilliant but troubled Shallan strives along a parallel path. Despite being broken in ways she refuses to acknowledge, she bears a terrible burden: to somehow prevent the return of the legendary Voidbringers and the civilization-ending Desolation that will follow. The secrets she needs can be found at the Shattered Plains, but just arriving there proves more difficult than she could have imagined.Meanwhile, at the heart of the Shattered Plains, the Parshendi are making an epochal decision. Hard pressed by years of Alethi attacks, their numbers ever shrinking, they are convinced by their war leader, Eshonai, to risk everything on a desperate gamble with the very supernatural forces they once fled. The possible consequences for Parshendi and humans alike, indeed, for Roshar itself, are as dangerous as they are incalculable. The doors of the Stormlight Archive first opened to us with The Way of Kings. Read that book now available in all formats and then Words of Radiance, and you can be part of the adventure every dazzling step of the way.

Even better than The Way of Kings! The action really ramps up in this book, and Shallan continues to be a cool character. Some surprise revelations at the end make it a tough wait to read the third book!

I liked this one. I kinda want to read the next one now. lol But from what I have read the order matters. Oh, well. I can‘t wait to hear what you all thought of where this one went. There was on part where I cheered really loud. I bet you can guess. #CosmereBuddyRead

rabbitprincess THE TALKING SWORD IS BACK!!!!!! 🤩 Cannot wait to see how that plays out, haha. I binged the book over the weekend because I was about a week behind and was determined to be on time for Elantris. Luckily, this part made it easy for me to want to know what happened next! 1w
rabbitprincess Also my copy of Elantris is « only » 600-some pages, which feels like a walk in the park compared to this chunkster ? 1w
See All 8 Comments
JacqMac @rabbitprincess I loved the that the talking sword is back! I am a little concerned about Adolin taking out Sadeas and what it‘s going to mean for who he becomes. That being said, I was thrilled that he did it. 1w
rabbitprincess @JacqMac Adolin taking out Sadeas was a mix of YEAH and YEARGH for me because I am squeamish about eye injuries 😅 I think that was the bit where I exclaimed loud enough for my spouse to notice 😂 1w
Leniverse I would love to go straight to book 3, but the appearance of that sword is enough to convince me that detouring to other stories is probably worth it for the crossovers. As for Adolin killing Sadeas, I see nothing morally wrong about it. At all. And I'm a pacifist at heart. 😂 I hope Adolin isn't going to start anguishing about it. 1w
Leniverse I was So Scared when the white assassin turned up! I was sure that Sanderson was about to kill off a bunch of characters that I cared about. I even had to go check the back cover of book 3 to calm myself down, and it didn't help because it didn't mention Adolin 😆 I'm weirded out that not only did we not lose a MC, but we even got one back. Or two. Thrilled about Jasnah, less so about the psycho shin assassin becoming handpicked as a radiant. 1w
Meshell1313 Yes yes and yes! I literally screamed when the sword- nightblood?-was back! And when Kaladin finally accepted his role and armor I loved it! And you guys were sooo right about Jasnah!!! @Leniverse @rabbitprincess (edited) 1w

Sorry I‘m late. I might have forgotten what day it is. Summer is not my season. Anyway, I‘m so glad there are other books in this series, because I don‘t think we are going to get all the answers I need by the end of this one. And I was so worried he was going to kill someone I liked this week. I am riding in the edge. I have trust issues with this man now. lol
#CosmereBuddyRead

Leniverse Full disclosure, I read all of this part on Saturday and then I finished the book on Sunday. I just couldn't wait. 😅 And I've been really impatient to discuss. I feel for @Meshell1313 who finished ages ago 😂 But anyway, about this week's part - my favourite bit was ⤵️ 2w
Leniverse finding out that Adolin had incarcerated himself out of solidarity with Kaladin. When he wrote Shallan and asked her to visit and she was all "sorry not sorry, busy at work", he was actually in jail. Poor man ? That plus his pretty astute observations about Amaram etc made him really rise in my estimate! 2w
See All 8 Comments
JacqMac @Leniverse That was so great. lol I love Shallan more and more. 2w
Meshell1313 @Leniverse yes!! I‘m 100% sure you screamed out loud at the part I did! One more week and then we can discuss!!! 2w
Meshell1313 Also I‘m obsessed with Kaladin and Shallan together. I would not be upset if they end up together. I‘m a little sad we take a break from these characters for the next 2 books- I‘m soo ready for answers that are probably in Oathbringer! 2w
Leniverse @Meshell1313 Hah, I was thinking that I hope the Kaladin - Shallan mutual admiration party doesn't go any further. I really hate love triangles 🤪 2w
JacqMac @Leniverse @Meshell1313 I think Shallan and Kaladin are too much alike to be a couple. I hope they don‘t turn romantic. I hate a triangle, too. Lol 2w

I fell behind on this part for a bit. Summer is so busy. And so hot. Yuck. I‘m just finishing up the interludes today. But that was an action packed section wasn‘t it? And I loved the scene with Wit. I hope there is more of that to come. #CosmereBuddyRead

Leniverse I haven't read the interludes yet either, but I have a lot to say! This section showed no consideration for my poor nerves! 😅 I keep worrying that Kaladin will turn to the dark side and become a Sith Lord instead of a Jedi. Only, that would probably kill Syl and he'd lose his powers, so he can't really go Sith, can he 🤔 3w
Leniverse And I feel like a right plonker. I didn't realise Gaz was... Gaz until Bridge 4 recognised him. I'd forgotten all about him going missing 🤪 And I was clearly wrong about the origin of Shallan's shardblade (and isn't that situation a right mess?!) My new theory is that she simply manifested it with her powers, which would make it a blade that Kaladin could wield (not that I can see her lending it to him). And on that note: 3w
See All 9 Comments
Leniverse I find it extremely frustrating how much clearly important stuff Shallan is actively repressing. A bit impressed by it too. That ability to just not hear or think about certain things. But bleedin' hell her backstory is dragging out. 3w
Meshell1313 @Leniverse I couldn‘t agree more! Shallan is in WAY over her head though. I feel like she‘s probably a terrible actress. I loved the fight scene with Adolin. The way he writes fight scenes is insane. And how about Wit??? I love how everyone has their own interactions with him. 3w
Leniverse @Meshell1313 I love Wit as a character, but he's clearly Hoid, right? And that makes him, what, some sort of immortal galactic meddeler? A literal Deus Ex Machina? I'm not sure I like that as a concept. 3w
JacqMac @Leniverse @Meshell1313 I think Shallan is out of her element. But I‘m hoping she grows into it as she gets a little older. I really how this marriage works out. Yes, Wit is Hoid. I see him as the big God of the whole Cosmere. But I could be wrong. 3w
rabbitprincess I‘m at the interludes for Part 3 so will come back to read the comments. My thoughts: The four-on-one Shardblade duel was epic, and I think Shallan would get along very well with Mary Roach given that one of her biggest questions to Adolin about Shardplate was how he used the bathroom while wearing it 🤣🤣🤣 (it was a very Packing for Mars kind of question) 2w
JacqMac @rabbitprincess That was one of my favorite parts, because I‘d ask the same thing. Lol I love Mary Roach and I completely agree. 2w

Happy Canada Day! This one is getting really hard to put down between parts. But I make myself because I want to avoid posting spoilers. lol I‘m very interested to see where things go now that Shallan and Kal have met. And just where did that Shardblade come from?!
#CosmereBuddyRead

Leniverse The shardblade clearly came from her brother. But I'm curious as to why it doesn't take ten heartbeats to summon! 1mo
Leniverse I was So Worried that Shallan would make the wrong choices and end up in Sadeas' camp! I guess that could still happen, but it seems much less likely with what she now knows. Not that this was the only stressful thing about this part. Bloody hell 😅 1mo
See All 10 Comments
Meshell1313 Oooh her brother! Interesting! I take notes for each part so I don‘t get ahead with our discussions - the end of part 2 is crazy! I love Shallan‘s growth and keep hoping that Jasnah is alive. I‘m again like “Sanderson wouldn‘t kill her off right?” But that‘s what he does. Tortures me. And I am living for Kaladin and Shallan meeting! I was like finally! 1mo
Leniverse I mean, it makes sense, right? In the flashbacks there's the brother that has a shardblade, but I don't think we've heard about him in the present timeline, so I figure he's dead, maybe in confrontation with their dad, Shallan took the blade, killed the dad, and somehow she insta-bonded with the blade. 1mo
Leniverse And I wonder how the second meeting between Shallan and Kaladin will go 😂 (I keep almost writing Shaladin and Kallan and that annoys me because I don't ship those two together) 😆 1mo
JacqMac @Leniverse Oh, the brother. That makes total sense. I also can‘t wait for the next meeting. And I secretly hope Jasnah is okay. 1mo
rabbitprincess Holy smokes! Shallan summoning the Shardblade was EPIC! I had somehow forgotten about the brother, but that seems a plausible source for her ability. And whoa, the bit with Eshonai taking on Stormform! Interesting that even the Storm Rider has limits to his power. Isn‘t she supposed to be parleying with Dalinar soon? If so, he is in for a surprise 😅 1mo
Leniverse @rabbitprincess I think the peace talks just got cancelled 😂😬 1mo

I‘m posting this tonight, because I‘m going to be really busy for the next couple of days and I didn‘t want to forget. Was that not an amazing first part?! I was happy and sad and anxious. So many surprises! I can‘t wait to see where Sanderson takes us next.
#CosmereBuddyRead

Leniverse I'm having the opposite problem to book one - I read this part in two days and didn't want to stop! Fortunately those two days were Sunday and Monday, so I didn't have to stop for long 😂 Looking forward to going back in this afternoon 1mo
Meshell1313 Agreed! I love that it picked up right where we left off and that I couldn‘t put it down. I still have many questions about the spreen and how they come to be but I‘m ready for our story lines to converge!!! 1mo
See All 9 Comments
Leniverse @Meshell1313 Yes! I am looking forward to Shallan getting there. Will she get along with Adolin? Will Pattern and Syl get in a fight, since there's apparently some animosity between those two types? Will Kaladin confront Amaram, and if so who will Dalinar side with? Will Amaram's appearance lead to Kaladin deciding not to reveal his abilities to Dalinar? Hoping for answers in the next episode of Soap 😂 1mo
rabbitprincess Just finished Part 1 and am both pleased and upset that there was a classic Sanderson « holy shit! » moment in this part. Pleased because he does these moments well, upset because Jasnah was killed ? Proud if Shallan for managing on her own. I liked the interlude as well because we finally get to see some of the Parshendi/listener culture. 1mo
rabbitprincess @Leniverse love the Soap reference 😂 1mo
Leniverse @rabbitprincess Yes, the Parshendi/Listener interlude was interesting. Now if we can only get an Interlude from that Herald who turned up at the end of the previous book some things might start to make sense! ? As for the "holy shit" moment I'm not sure whether to be relieved to get it out of the way or nervous about who he will kill off at the end of this book ? 1mo
JacqMac @rabbitprincess @Leniverse @Meshell1313 Soap! 🤣 I was so shocked that he killed someone in the very first part. But I do love that he always surprises me. I hope Shallan still gets to marry Adolin. I want to see that power couple. 1mo

#CosmereBuddyRead

Leniverse I have to say I'm glad we didn't start with this series. I would have likely bailed on The Way of Kings after two or three hundred pages and never picked up another Sanderson book again 😬 But as it is, I am eager to continue the series. 1mo
JacqMac @Leniverse I feel the same way. I totally would have bailed and I never would have understood why people love them. lol 1mo

Meshell1313 I am also loving this one already. So glad it‘s not as slow going as Way of Kings and just kind of picks up right in the middle of the action! 1mo

An audio copy of WORDS OF RADIANCE came in for me 12 weeks sooner than scheduled. I‘ve been listening as much as possible so I can finish it in time to also squeeze in a holiday romance before Christmas, which meant it was time to break out the Mustang puzzle I‘d been saving for a special occasion. Now that I‘ve seen 50 years of Mustangs all in one place, I can confirm the ‘69 is 100% my fave. I only wish they‘d used the orange convertible here.

Such a good book in development of the characters and plot! It had its highs and revelations! And its lows and inner turmoil for the main characters. It even opened a lot of questions that I hope the next book in the series will answer.

I listened to the audiobook (49 hours), but sooo worth it! The two narrators do a superb job reading!

A continuation of the Stormlight Archives following four to five main characters with occasional short entries of other character spread out in the book. There‘s so much going on in these books that it‘s hard to summarize… yet at the same time it feels like not much has happened either??🙈 I am enjoying reading these but the books are a huge commitment both time and memory wise. My husband got me a @bigblanketco blanket and it‘s literally the coziest thing ever. It‘s 10‘x10‘ and completely over the top. But I absolutely love it. I knew it would be perfect for this list. Because who wouldn‘t love reading a Christmas story under a 100 square foot blanket? 😂😂😂

TEArificbooks I have one of these on my Christmas wish list. We have a couch that is big as a king bed that we all curl up together on at night to read together so this blanket would be perfect 3y
Kimberlone I also have a big blanket and it is the best! I love how heavy and warm it is 3y
wildwoodreads @mdm139 I hope you get it! They‘re amazing. 3y

I had intentions of taking a cute stack picture of my tbr. But I forgot to do that yesterday. And this morning was absolutely freezing. Everything had a thin layer of ice on it and the wind kept blowing everything around. So long story short. Play like I haven‘t shared these pictures before. 😂😂😂

Happy Thanksgiving, Littens. Tonight I‘m thankful for family, friends, thick books, and cozy blankets. I‘m glad I‘m squeezing some time to read in before I succumb to a food coma. 😂

jitteryjane724 Once I get through Wheel of Time I'm really excited to dive into Sanderson's work! Do you have a recommendation for where to start? 3y
wildwoodreads @jitteryjane724 I started with The Mistborn Series. 3y
jitteryjane724 @wildwoodreads great, thanks! 3y

1. I am usually reading a couple books at the same time. Usually one on audiobook and one physical and sometimes a third on my Kindle.
2. Tagged is my current favorite of the year. I have bailed a few things this year, probably the most notable is The Atlas Six, which I bailed on twice…

Eggs Thanks for the thoughtful responses 💙👏🏻 3y

What‘s on your November tbr? 🍁🍁🍁🍁

I still have a couple of spooky books that I want to read. Then I hope to dive back into The Stormlight Archives this month. *fingers crossed*

I might finish one or two by the end of the month but they won‘t be my favorite. The Poison Song - end of a trilogy - was amazing but Words of Radiance is still my top read of the year so far.

I didn‘t enjoy this quite as much as Way of Kings but it was still a great novel. I felt overwhelmed at times with the world building. Shallan also drove me insane during this book.

This was phenomenal. I enjoyed book 1, but like all epic fantasy book 1‘s, it was heavy on world building and introduction of characters, so it took a long time to get to the action. This is 1300 pages of action and amazing characters. This is a beautiful high fantasy world and this book is added to my favorite reads of all time. I am a full on Sanderson fan now! 5⭐️
#Chunksterchallenge - 1310 pages!
#NSR22 - epic fantasy

I did a little book shopping today. It feels like it‘s been forever since I set foot into a bookstore. I went in for Words of Radiance but I got distracted along the way.

I‘ve been wanting Deserter for awhile but I‘ve never heard of The Haunted Bookstore. Let me know in the comments if you‘ve read it. I‘d love to hear some reviews.
