Words of Radiance
Words of Radiance | Brandon Sanderson
Brandon Sanderson's The Stormlight Archive sequence began in 2010 with the New York Times bestseller The Way of Kings. Now, the eagerly anticipated Words of Radiance continues the epic story and answers many of your questions.Six years ago, the Assassin in White, a hireling of the inscrutable Parshendi, assassinated the Alethi king on the very night a treaty between men and Parshendi was being celebrated. So began the Vengeance Pact among the highprinces of Alethkar and the War of Reckoning against the Parshendi. Now the Assassin is active again, murdering rulers all over the world of Roshar, using his baffling powers to thwart every bodyguard and elude all pursuers. Among his prime targets is Highprince Dalinar, widely considered the power behind the Alethi throne. His leading role in the war would seem reason enough, but the Assassin's master has much deeper motives.Expected by his enemies to die the miserable death of a military slave, Kaladin survived to be given command of the royal bodyguards, a controversial first for a low-status "darkeyes." Now he must protect the king and Dalinar from every common peril as well as the distinctly uncommon threat of the Assassin, all while secretly struggling to master remarkable new powers that are somehow linked to his honorspren, Syl.Brilliant but troubled Shallan strives along a parallel path. Despite being broken in ways she refuses to acknowledge, she bears a terrible burden: to somehow prevent the return of the legendary Voidbringers and the civilization-ending Desolation that will follow. The secrets she needs can be found at the Shattered Plains, but just arriving there proves more difficult than she could have imagined.Meanwhile, at the heart of the Shattered Plains, the Parshendi are making an epochal decision. Hard pressed by years of Alethi attacks, their numbers ever shrinking, they are convinced by their war leader, Eshonai, to risk everything on a desperate gamble with the very supernatural forces they once fled. The possible consequences for Parshendi and humans alike, indeed, for Roshar itself, are as dangerous as they are incalculable. The doors of the Stormlight Archive first opened to us with The Way of Kings. Read that book now available in all formats and then Words of Radiance, and you can be part of the adventure every dazzling step of the way.

I finished my first book in the #YearoftheChunksters It was a little over 1K pages. So good and it was also exhausting. Love the story and the world building is spectacular! Memorable characters with lots of action. Already looking forward to the next book in the series.

@TheReadingMermaid

cherinium I love this one. I plan to reread it sometime this year...maybe--if I can squeeze it in with all the books I'm trying to get through for challenges. 6d

Somehow, this novel manages to be astonishing even as I get accustomed to Sanderson‘s high quality work. I loved it, it is a fantastic second chapter to the Stormlight Archive and I couldn‘t help but read it late into the night when I really ought to have been sleeping. But who could sleep when there is honor and hope, treachery and foreboding, and characters who feel so real they could be human? I was on the edge of my seat, loving every word.

cherinium I love everything I've read by Sanderson. 2mo
KrystalClarity Me too! One of my siblings recommended his books early this year and it‘s like, “Where have you been all my life?” 😄 2mo

I read everything I set out to read last week! That was:

• the second half of BLUE LILY, LILY BLUE and—my biggest accomplishment—the last 70% of WORDS OF RADIANCE
• a goodly chunk of OVER THE TOP
• HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX on audio
• CLAY‘S ARK (which, okay, I‘ve still gotta finish, but it‘ll happen tonight)

I also squeezed in the latest volume of THE LEGEND OF KORRA. It was my only comic last week. 😔

WORDS OF RADIANCE is 1310 pages long. It took me 30 hours to read. And it‘s good all the way through.

Rare, that.

Sanderson packs this second Stormlight tome with exactly the right blend of action, introspection, and tension. There‘s always something interesting on the page; a new revelation, or a deeper look at one of the characters, or an unexpected branch to one of the many interconnected storylines. It‘s a hell of an achievement.

4.5 stars

I gather WARBREAKER is maybe Sanderson‘s least popular work, but it‘s my favourite of all his books and Nightblood is maybe (probably) my favourite of all his characters so I‘m OHMYGODing SO HARD RIGHT NOW.

Savoury pumpkin scones + WORDS OF RADIANCE. These came out perfectly baked, but I find I only like the flavour when I top them with cream cheese. Oh well. They were still a worthwhile experiment.

Im 55% through WoR now, and it‘s doing it for me in a big way. Sanderson‘s finally penned a second book I can get behind! He‘s broken his streak of disappointment!

(Unless the last 45% is dodgy. Let‘s hope that‘s not the case.)

And now, this week‘s #bookreport. I:

• read 20% more of WORDS OF RADIANCE
• knocked both WINTER TALES and UNICORN TRACKS off La TBR
• read FIND ME
• started rereading BLUE LILY, LILY BLUE
• read all the Age of X-Man comics on my library stack
• finished THE ART OF LIVING and started HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX on audio

I didn‘t manage to finish my current poetry collection (MxT by Sina Queyras; not pictured). Maybe tomorrow.

Sace I can't get over the size of that Sanderson book! 😱 2mo

I headed back into WORDS OF RADIANCE over a furikake lunch. (I once saw a movie where a chef put only a teeny, tiny bit of furikake on her rice, so maybe that‘s the official Right Way To Eat It? Obviously, I reject that paradigm.) I‘m gonna read my latest 10%, pause to reread BLUE LILY, LILY BLUE, then maybe blast on through to the end. I really want to finish it by the end of the month and I‘m running out of time.

Y‘all, I‘m really glad I bought the ebook edition of WORDS OF RADIANCE when it was on for $2.99. The paperback is about half as thick as my (admittedly littlest) beer glass is tall, and while paperback chunksters are easier for me to read than their hardcover twins, they‘re still hell on my hands.

Anyways, Charlie‘s parents brought me a 24 of Sam Adams‘s holiday ales from America, and I‘m gonna try another while I finish my latest chunk of WoR.

I‘m pleased to see the Shallan endpapers reproduced in my digital copy of WORDS OF RADIANCE. So pretty!

I didn‘t have much reading time today, but I‘m hoping to sink a small ways in before I fall asleep. I‘m also praying WoR doesn‘t suffer from the second book slump that‘s plagued every single one of Sanderson‘s other second books.

Come on, WoR! Don‘t disappoint me like THE WELL OF ASCENSION, SHADOWS OF SELF, or ALCATRAZ #2!

I forgot to share my November Must-Reads! WORDS OF RADIANCE was always a given, seeing as how it‘s the last book on the chunkster bingo card I made myself in January, so I picked three short ‘uns to fill out the list:

• Butler‘s third Patternist book, which I couldn‘t squeeze in last month
• young lesbians on safari in search of unicorns (I think)
• young gay dudes at a bakery (I think)

Sometimes it‘s the little details that make me smile! 😁

The symbols at the beginning of a chapter in The Stormlight Archive denote which character‘s POV that chapter will be in. But it wasn‘t until I was pretty far into the series that I noticed that for the flashback chapters, the colors of the symbol are inverted! To the left is Shallan‘s normal symbol, to the right is her flashback symbol!

There‘s always something new to discover in a book!

Branwen YAAAASSSSS! Sanderson is such a freaking genius! 😍💕 10mo

Buechersuechtling That‘s a really cool and clever idea for plot-/story-related illustrations in books. 🥰 10mo
DaveGreen7777 @Buechersuechtling I love when books use illustrations like that! The Wheel of Time series had great chapter symbols too! 😀 10mo
Buechersuechtling @DaveGreen7777 Will you hush⁉️🤫 Don‘t mention (too many) titles of books series in my presence 😉 because I – I don‘t know why – tend to start them and then somehow forget to continue them. And then suddenly I have a bad conscience and feel like I need to be running around in circles, screaming because I don‘t get anything done. So, no, no more series for me (at the moment). Pleeeze‼️😂 10mo
DaveGreen7777 @Buechersuechtling HA HA! Fair enough! I‘m running out of room in my house due to all the books there that I still haven‘t even read, so I completely understand where you‘re coming from! 😁 10mo
Buechersuechtling @DaveGreen7777 Supplement: the audiobook I am currently listening to during my commute it is 🥁 part of a series. It‘s the fourth part – but to be honest I really didn‘t know that until I started listening. But guess what I now need to urgently do❓ Correct, read/listen to all the other parts published. There you see what series do to me. 😂 10mo
DaveGreen7777 I can totally relate, @Buechersuechtling! I‘ve been known to buy multiple books in a series before I even begin reading the first book! 😂🙈 10mo
Buechersuechtling @DaveGreen7777 Oh, welcome to my world. 🤝 I do this too – except that I most of the time don‘t buy the books but wait for my (online) library to have purchased X volumes … 🤷🏽‍♀️ 10mo

The second book in this series was just as entertaining as the first, although it suffered from the same saggy middle as the first one. I enjoyed the character development amongst the main characters, although I felt one was more stagnant then the others. My favourite got a lot of page time, which was fantastic.
