Warbreaker
Warbreaker | Brandon Sanderson
After bursting onto the fantasy scene with his acclaimed debut novel, Elantris, and following up with his blockbuster Mistborn trilogy, Brandon Sanderson proves again that he is today's leading master of what Tolkien called "secondary creation," the invention of whole worlds, complete with magics and myths all their own.Warbreaker is the story of two sisters, who happen to be princesses, the God King one of them has to marry, the lesser god who doesn't like his job, and the immortal who's still trying to undo the mistakes he made hundreds of years ago.Their world is one in which those who die in glory return as gods to live confined to a pantheon in Hallandren's capital city and where a power known as BioChromatic magic is based on an essence known as breath that can only be collected one unit at a time from individual people.By using breath and drawing upon the color in everyday objects, all manner of miracles and mischief can be accomplished. It will take considerable quantities of each to resolve all the challenges facing Vivenna and Siri, princesses of Idris; Susebron the God King; Lightsong, reluctant god of bravery, and mysterious Vasher, the Warbreaker.

4✨ I read this a while ago, but never got to review it. The world building of breath, color, and gods was beautifully written. Vivenna was not my favorite, but I appreciate an outside look at what was happening in the castle. The god king and Siri was my favorite POV and I was rooting for them the whole time. Lightsong brought a lot of humor to the book, and the ending for him was unexpected, but much appreciated!

I found a crossover! The storyteller that gives Siri (and us) the entire backstory to the realm. The name was nagging at me. The passage in the photo might not refer to events in The Final Empire, but there is a Hoid there. (Reading on kindle can be handy. I did a search on his name in the books.) He's the beggar-informer in book 1 who makes Kelsier angry enough to reveal more than he intended. And I think the one Vin decided not to approach in 3

JacqMac That is a great find! I didn‘t notice it. I think I have to pay more attention. Lol 3w
julesG Hoid pops up a lot. 😉 And that's from me who got a lot of background info from friends who love the series, but I DNF'd the first book. 😬 3w

I loved this one. I especially loved the humor and sarcasm that went along with the sad bits. And it was so unpredictable. He kept me guessing until the very end. I can‘t wait to hear what you all think. #CosmereBuddyRead

Meshell1313 I loved this one and the ending! Lightsong‘s storyline was my favorite and his ending I thought was perfection. I am also pleased with Vivenna and Vasher‘s ending kind of walking off together to who knows where- but you know she can‘t ever go back to her old life. 4w
JacqMac @Meshell1313 This one might be my favorite so far. I loved the ending, too. I agree Lightsong‘s whole storyline was absolute perfection. 4w

Andrew65 I have finally caught up, yee haw!!!
I agree with you both @meshell1313 and @jacqmac this was an excellent book and my favourite so far. I loved the very feel of it from the get go. As well as Lightsong and his story, I really enjoyed the moments between Siri and Susebron, and their developing relationship. I‘m really not ready to let these characters go.
4w
Leniverse Wow, what a finale. Once I started this part I couldn't put the book down 😅 I thought I had things figured out, but I was mostly wrong. E.g. I thought Lightsong was Idrian 😂 I did guess Vasher's real identity though, although he had me confused for a while. I'm glad Viv asked for clarification in the end, to get it confirmed. And I really hope Sanderson gets around to the sequel soon! 3w
Leniverse I even thought Blushweaver was faking her torture, to trick Lightweaver 🤦🏻‍♀️ I was more paranoid than Viv at the end. And yet I didn't guess at who the mastermind was. I should have. The signs were all there, even the lack of knowledge about their religious beliefs. I was sure that was significant, and still I was surprised. This was so well done. @Andrew65 @Meshell1313 @JacqMac 3w
JacqMac @Leniverse It was so well done. I didn‘t guess any of it either. I was also suspicious of Blushweaver. I am really hoping for a sequel, too. I want more of the characters. 3w
Andrew65 @Leniverse From what I read somewhere will be 2027 for a sequel at the earliest, and that it wouldn‘t be so much a sequel as including the stories of one or two characters from this book. (edited) 3w
Leniverse @Andrew65 That's a shame. What I've seen is that there's to be a sequel called Nightblood, following Vasher and Viv (and the sword, obvs), but that it wasn't due until after several other books. I was hoping he'd been inspired to move it forward 😂 But maybe this is an extra, then? Like a 1.5 novella, or 0.5 backstory? 3w
Andrew65 @Leniverse We should write to him and tell him how urgent it is for us to read it. 😂 3w
JacqMac @Andrew65 😂 We should. I did read that Nightblood is on hold. I hope he eventually writes it. 3w
Leniverse @Andrew65 @JacqMac I mean, I guess we have a few Cosmere books to occupy us while we wait 😂 3w
Roary47 This book was awesome. I also didn‘t predict all these endings. Lightsong was so selfless. I was rooting for the God King and Siri. Now I need to hurry and catch up before our next check in. 3w
Andrew65 @Leniverse @Jacqmac Just a few and they seem to get bigger! 3w
JacqMac @Andrew65 I have arthritis in my thumb and I have to wear a brace on it to hold the big ones. lol 3w
Andrew65 @JacqMac Ouch, that‘s the problems with big books. I also get very sore wrists. 3w

Another great book from Sanderson. The magical system based on colour was super neat, and the ending chapter provides good lore. I liked Siri and Vivenna as well as Lightsong, who makes this book have a bit more levity than the Mistborn trilogy (which is not unfunny, just more serious).

I don‘t know why it has taken me so long to start reading Sanderson. I really love the Cosmere. For those of you doing the #CosmereBuddyRead rumor is that Sanderson is writing a part 2 for this one, with the working title Nightblood, but it‘s currently on hold. 🤞

Just finished this #cosmerebuddyread and Sanderson has done it again. This one was a standalone in the same world but I loved these characters and hate to leave them. His world building and magic systems are unmatched. Two princesses being used as pawns as the threat of war looms. As with any Sanderson book there are betrayals, shifting alliances and interesting love matches. Can‘t wait to see what everyone thinks of the ending! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

JacqMac I‘m so close to being finished and I still don‘t know how it‘s going to end. lol 1mo

I‘m a little bit late today. My modem decided to freak out and I spent most of the day trying to get the tiniest bit of internet. They are sending a new one, but it‘s going to take a couple of days. I might disappear again, but I will eventually be back. Anyway, I did not expect the story to go where it did. Sanderson never fails to surprise me. I can‘t wait to hear what you all think. #CosmereBuddyRead

Andrew65 @JacqMac I‘ve just started chapter 15 so only about two weeks behind now 😂 Better than 2 books behind! 😳 Hope to catch up before the next book! Really enjoying this one. Very different to the initial trilogy. Interesting to see how (if) if joins up in the future. 1mo
Andrew65 Good luck with your internet issues. 1mo

JacqMac @Andrew65 Two weeks is much closer. Lol I‘m starting to panic a little because I haven‘t been able to find a copy of the next book yet, but I‘m sure I will get one in time. I‘m also wondering if there will be a crossover of some sort in the future. 1mo
Andrew65 @JacqMac What is the next book we‘re reading? Up to Chapter 19 now! 1mo
JacqMac @Andrew65 The Way of Kings is up next. It‘s the beginning of another series, that ends with the last book on our list. It‘s a bit of a mixed up list. But I‘m trusting the process. lol 1mo
Andrew65 @JacqMac Good progress tonight, got up to the start of Chapter 23. Thanks for the information on the book. Interesting section tonight, and still trying to work out what is going on. 1mo
Meshell1313 I am loving this one! I did not see that coming with Vivenna! Sanderson is still able to surprise me- you‘d think we‘d be used to it by now! 🤣 I am really curious how he is going to wrap this one up in the last section. I feel like as always I have more questions than answers. For instance- what do we think of Vasher? Where are his alliances? 1mo
JacqMac @Meshell1313 There is something I have liked about Vasher since the very beginning. I can‘t quite say what it is, I just had this feeling that he was a good bad guy. lol 1mo
rabbitprincess @Meshell1313 I totally agree about how Sanderson is still able to surprise! I‘m almost looking forward more to the re-read so that I can see how he lays the clues. 1mo
rabbitprincess @JacqMac I have a copy of The Way of Kings (which I think is the next book). Want me to figure out a chapter breakdown? (I will probably finish Warbreaker today lol) (edited) 1mo
Leniverse Ok, I just finished Hero of Ages, so I guess now I have a week to read all of Warbreaker? 😂 I'll try to do it in two 😅 1mo
Meshell1313 @Leniverse it won‘t be a problem- it reads even faster than the first 3! Buckle up. 1mo
Meshell1313 @rabbitprincess yessss!! Exactly! That would be fun! 1mo
JacqMac @rabbitprincess I ordered a copy and I‘m hoping it arrives in time. But if not I‘ll let you know. Thanks. 1mo
JacqMac @Leniverse It‘s a very quick read, even though it‘s huge. You can do it! lol 1mo
Andrew65 @Meshell1313 @Leniverse I agree it does read a lot quicker, I‘m just approaching halfway only having started it this week. (edited) 1mo
Leniverse Alright, I've reached the end of this section. I had thought that war was becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy: The more they did to avoid it, the more likely war became. But I didn't see that twist coming! I thought maybe Jewel would betray them. Anyway, lots of character growth all round here. I'm excited for the final part. @Andrew65 @Meshell1313 @rabbitprincess @Roary47 3w
Roary47 I just got The Way of The Kings at goodwill recently. I‘d love to read that series with everyone next. 😍 3w

It‘s all starting to come together now. The girls make more sense to me. Also, I have a little crush on Lightsong. #CosmereBuddyRead.

Meshell1313 😂 yes! I keep hoping he‘ll end up with Siri! What do we think of the magic system? 1mo
Leniverse I've fallen so far behind! I'm still on the previous book. My Easter Crime reading hasn't helped. Fortunately this weekend will be the 24-hour readathon, and I intend to do a Cosmere binge. 😁 Am I right that this one is a standalone? Is it the same world, different era, or completely different? 1mo
See All 15 Comments
Meshell1313 @Leniverse oooh I‘m excited to see what you think of the ending of Hero of ages! This one I believe is a stand alone in the Cosmere world but I think the magic system makes it feel very different. But it‘s just as good- maybe even better. 1mo
JacqMac @Meshell1313 I love the magic system. Breath and colors is a genius idea. I like you aren‘t quite taking their soul, but you‘re taking their colors. You can picture a little piece of them missing. 1mo
JacqMac @Leniverse Yes, it‘s a standalone. Everyone and everything is different, yet it feels similar. Probably because it‘s the same universe. You‘ll see when you start reading. It‘s big, but I find it even harder to put down. I don‘t think you‘ll have any trouble catching up. 1mo
Leniverse @Meshell1313 @JacqMac I'm intrigued! Also curious as to what makes them the same world/universe. I'll make sure my kindle is fully charged for the weekend! 1mo
rabbitprincess I loooove that Lightsong seems to have been a detective or investigator in a previous life! My first thought was “Sweet, free murder mystery with my fantasy novel” 😂 His desire to seem indolent and frivolous reminds me a bit of Lord Peter Wimsey, but there is probably another detective out there who is a closer match. Maybe Columbo? 1mo
JacqMac @rabbitprincess I love his sarcasm so much. lol 1mo
Roary47 @rabbitprincess I agree I love the murder mystery detective side and really just Lightsong himself! He is such a fun character especially when he is with “Scoot”. I really like the God King and Siri‘s growing relationship and the mystery of why shortly after the heir is born the God King might die. What is really going on? I hope Siri and Lightsong are able to get to the bottom of it. 1mo
Andrew65 Finally catching up and starting this, now only 19 days behind 😂 1mo
Leniverse Lightsong is really growing on me, but Denth and Tonk are my favourite characters. I want to know more about Denth. Siri isn't the sharpest tool in the drawer but she's very young and I think she's doing well. It's funny how Viv is all "poor Siri she's so unequipped to deal with any of this" but really she's the one struggling to adapt, not Siri. @Andrew65 @Roary47 @rabbitprincess @Meshell1313 4w
Andrew65 @Leniverse I think with everything she‘s dealing with and not having been prepared for this I think Siri is doing brilliantly, and I really like her character and the scenes with her in. Agree totally about Viv. 4w
JacqMac @Leniverse I love how strong Siri is. And I love watching her get smarter as the story progresses. You still have some surprises to come though. Sanderson is so good with the twists. 4w
Roary47 @Leniverse I really didn‘t think about that when reading Viv‘s POV, but you are so right! 3w

I am in love with this one already. Sanderson is so great with character development. I was thinking that he might keep the magical system somewhat the same for the whole universe, but I guess not. Just where does he come up with these ideas?
#CosmereBuddyRead

Meshell1313 At first I was sad to leave Elend and Vin! But now I‘m even more obsessed with Siri and Vivenna! I also expected the metal magic system but now this one involves colors? I‘m hooked! 2mo
rabbitprincess My skin was crawling for a good chunk of this first part at the idea of the king of Idris having to send a daughter to be a « vessel » to the God King ? the colour magic system is cool, though, and both Siri and Vivenna seem to be holding their own so far ?? 2mo
See All 10 Comments
JacqMac @rabbitprincess I do find it hard to believe that someone with a strong independent personality would react the way Siri did. I expected her to put up a fight or run away or something. But I guess we will see where it goes. 2mo
Roary47 I finally got through the first part, and I also am loving it! @rabbitprincess I agree with dreading one of the daughters being a “vessel” and also how she is even called this when she gets there. I really like the changing hair color like a mood ring, and there is deeper stories I‘m exciting to unfold. Hopefully, I can catch up so I can chat at the same time with everyone at our next checkin. 🥰 1mo
Leniverse Ok, this starts out like a twisted version of Beauty & the Beast. Or one of those fairytales where the bride can't look upon her husband at night for a year because of a curse. With zombie warriors and spiritual vampire Faraos. Looking forward to finding out which of the sisters Lightsong has been dreaming of (guaranteed to be one of them). @Meshell1313 @rabbitprincess @Roary47 4w
Leniverse I'm also wondering why this and The Final Empire are considered to be part of the same universe. They seem like separate fantasy worlds to me. Different magic systems. Different sociopolitical systems, one mainly based on Western feudalism w/climate change, the other on Ancient Egypt. Both have living/human deities, and no standard fantasy creatures (dragons, elves etc) but that's the only commonality (so far). 4w
Leniverse Oh, and another question I'm pondering. How did the guy with the sentient sword lose most but not all of Breath (as of the start of the Prologue)? That shouldn't be possible. He must have left some big Awakenings behind him somewhere and somewhen 🤔 4w
Meshell1313 @Leniverse yes I‘m also wondering if there were little Easter eggs or connections to the other books I might have missed? But oh boy your ideas are great and can‘t wait to see your thoughts at the end! 4w
JacqMac @Leniverse I‘m still wondering how they are all connected, too. I kind of hope some characters are going to pop up in some of the other books. 4w

Infinite Jest I've been wanting to read for a long time, so it seems like a good time to use it for this challenge! I've also been wanting to read all of Hobb's books, starting with the Rainwilds series, so I'm including those as well. My first time reading Brandon Sanderson. I'm just a little late to the party lol. I enjoyed this, even though it took me forever to read (not entirely its fault, an awful lot of library holds came in). A good epic fantasy with a very interesting magic system.

TheAromaofBooks I still haven't read any Sanderson books, either! This one is on my TBR! 4y
MsMelissa I should make a point to read this one next year. 4y

RHYTHM OF WAR made me want to reread WARBREAKER. My library‘s got it on audio, so here I am, ready for some #audiocrafting!

Today I took the kinda boring, off-brand traveller‘s notebook that‘ll hold my 2021 reading journal and jazzed it up with a new cover. It‘s part of an Aimee Stewart bookshelf painting, taken from a calendar I had a couple years back.

Traci1 I'm working on a cross stitch of that piece. I'm about 35,000 of 282,000 stitches in, so I'll be done in no time. 😄 4y
xicanti @Traci1 oh my goodness! That‘s quite a time commitment, but it‘s gonna be gorgeous. 4y
Traci1 @xicanti it's what I do while I'm listening to audiobooks. Keeps my hands busy. I don't know if I'll ever finish it, but for me it's more that I enjoy the process than that I need the finished project, so that's ok. 4y
Texreader That‘s so awesome!!! 4y
xicanti @Texreader thanks! 4y

My #BookSpin and #doublespin this month have just a slight size difference... 😂

Warbreaker was my Sept #doublespin that was still on my list, so I'm happy it got picked again.

Thanks @TheAromaofBooks! 😁

Another Sanderson book to tick off the TBR pile.

Of course I loved it. First half was good second half was brilliant. I love the characters he brings to life.

This was my first Brandon Sanderson and I really enjoyed this complex and interesting read. I loved the magic system, the political intrigue, and the characters. The only issue was that it left me wanting more! 4.5 out of 5 ⭐

cherinium Sanderson will do that to you! His imagination is fantastic, and the more you read, the more you want. At least, that's how I feel. I love that he has invested so much time and energy building his #cosmere. It is so much fun to find the little clues about how all of his worlds with their differing magic systems are part if something much bigger. There's so much to explore! 6y

This book was an excellent, exciting, fun ride. I truly enjoyed it from start to finish. The characters felt like real people and the world building felt totally original. The plot was unpredictable enough to surprise but not so much so that it didn‘t make sense. I‘m looking forward to reading more Sanderson novels!

I have to admit, it took me a lot longer to become emotionally invested in this one than other Sanderson books I've read, but everything came together beautifully. By the end, I was ready to start over to pick out all the little clues I missed along the way. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I love Brandon Sanderson. #cosmere #fantasy #magic #sandersoncosmere #fantasticworldbuilding

Wow this book was amazing to read. This was my first Brandon Sanderson book, I will be looking up some more by him. I loved the magic system (Breaths and colors) the combination of them was wonderful to read about. Loved the characters, Gods, plot and twist the book provided. I would highly recommend this book
