The Gunslinger
The Gunslinger | Stephen King
An impressive work of mythic magnitude that may turn out to be Stephen Kings greatest literary achievement (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution), The Gunslinger is the first volume in the epic Dark Tower Series.A #1 national bestseller, The Gunslinger introduces readers to one of Stephen Kings most powerful creations, Roland of Gilead: The Last Gunslinger. He is a haunting figure, a loner on a spellbinding journey into good and evil. In his desolate world, which mirrors our own in frightening ways, Roland tracks The Man in Black, encounters an enticing woman named Alice, and begins a friendship with the boy from New York named Jake. Inspired in part by the Robert Browning narrative poem, Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came, The Gunslinger is a compelling whirlpool of a story that draws one irretrievable to its center (Milwaukee Sentinel). It is brilliant and freshand will leave you panting for more (Booklist).

A little bit maddening with how many characters and events are introduced and left completely unexplained, but the pace is quick and the characters are compelling. Anybody have any insights on whether the series picks up steam as it progresses? I‘m definitely going to give it at least another book to establish itself.

CareBear It definitely gets better. This one is like a setup book. 2w
BookwormM Definitely gets better ended up loving the series and there are so many King cross overs I feel compelled to lose myself in the King multiverse 2w
Zelma It gets much better. I always felt like the first book was such an odd beginning to the series. Try the second before deciding whether to abandon. 2w
wanderer15 Thanks everyone for the good feedback! Also I just realized I reviewed the wrong book - I was supposed to review The Gunslinger, not The Dark Tower (which apparently is the final book in the series). Glad Litsy lets me fix it. (edited) 2w

"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed."

Every time I read the opening line of King's Dark Tower series I shiver, because it's just so good! A character I love to hate is the man in black, Randall Flagg. He's just so evil, intelligent, and powerful...he gives me the creeps! I'm excited to hate him all over again now that I'm rereading The Stand! ?

#gratefulreads #characteryoulovetohate @OriginalCyn620

vivastory I started book 5 today, it's brilliant! 1mo
Branwen @vivastory That's the one I'm on also! 😀 Although its been a while since I've picked it up as I keep getting distracted by other things! 😁 1mo
vivastory What were your thoughts on Wizard and Glass? I know it's the most divisive book in the series, but I really enjoyed learning more about Roland's past. I felt like it also offered a better sense of Mid-World. 1mo
See All 9 Comments
Branwen @vivastory I actually LOVED Wizard and Glass! I also really liked learning about Roland's past and learning some of why he is the way he is. It was very enlightening and I think important to tje rest of the series. I didn't realize it was so divisive! Do many people not like it? 1mo
OriginalCyn620 👍🏻📚🖤 1mo
vivastory The feeling I got looking online after finishing it was that about half of the people disliked it, because they felt like it was an unnecessary detour from the main story. But I'm with you, I loved it. 1mo
Branwen @vivastory Yes! I also liked that the pace was a bit slower than the previous books, you know? It felt easier to absorb all that cool history! 1mo
vivastory Great point! I really appreciated the pacing, it felt more fully realized than the first 3. I couldn't help but read a bit into possible criticism of book 4 when at the beginning of book 5 Roland asked if they all liked reading their stories categorized one way & then he mentioned stew. I thought that was a brilliant metaphor for not only DT series, but King as a writer. How he's able to blend different styles together. 1mo
Branwen @vivastory Wow, yes! I hadn't thought of that before, but you're so right! 1mo

This was a tough one to be honest.

I have been very interested in Stephen King recently so I thought I would attempt to start this series.

However, The Gunslinger is leaving me feeling a bit confused. The Gunslinger is the last of his kind. The final one. He is on a quest to find the Man in Black and save the Dark Tower which basically keeps the worlds in line.

Or I‘m wrong! I‘m not quite sure!

So looking forward, I‘ll attempt book two!

Karkar @KristenDuck the first time I read this series I hated the first book. But it really is setting the background for the rest of the series. 3mo
Kerrioke Yeah, I wasn‘t that into The Gunslinger, but the second book was much better! I still need to finish this series. 3mo

2. SELF-COMPASSION - Just started this morning. I was led to read this book next as my non-fic/self-help book. I guess I could use some self-compassion...

The gunslinger is written in a more poetic style. The beginning strives to set the scene, and you can get lost reading it. As the story progresses though it goes back to that familiar Stephen King writing. It is a interesting beginning to the dynamic of the man in black and Roland. One of my favorite dark tower books. If you don‘t read the rest I would say to give this one a try.

#MarchIntoThe70s #Day28 ##CarryOnMyWaywardSon This Song has always reminded me of Roland Deschain in his never ending battle against The Man In Black. A man that has lost everything to this including his whole world & everyone he knew & then must relearn to be with others when his ka-tet arrives. I see him as a Sean Penn type figure, wrinkled clothes, dusty boots & hat with a heavy gun belt & wearing his suffering on his face. Carry on wayward son.

Cinfhen Yes, I always got a Western vibe from this song 8mo
gradcat You don‘t see him as an Idris Elba type? 🤔 8mo
Lizpixie @Cinfhen yes! Can‘t you see the wind blowing dust, the squint in his eyes, the creak of his gun belt? @gradcat not at all. I first read this at 15 & Stephen Kings description of Roland is more like what I‘ve seen in my mind for over 30yrs. 8mo

A re-read for my little #expandedDT journey. My first read was a couple of years ago. I was with many others in their belief that this is definitely not the best of the series. But reading it a 2nd time, after having read the whole series, gives it a whole new feel. An odd way to intro a series, but you have to have read the whole thing for the 1st book to reveal its full meaning.
Now to disturb my ever present #readingbuddy to grab another book.

I put off reading The Dark Tower series for years because people who love his horror novels (like me) seem to really not love the DT series. I picked this up on a whim and... I really enjoyed it. Pickpick

The inner monologue and pace of the book makes it worth it. Roland Deschain (The Gunslinger) is cold and calulated, this chilling inner monologe is what makes the book stand out. The secondary characters in the book are pretty bland. The villain has alot of build up but not alot of memorable traits. The fighting and flashbacks save this book from being a miserable Journey. A good quick read, recommend for flights or traveling. 7/10
