There was so much in this book to keep me wanting and needing more. Curt's past, the sister's past, a secret journal, etc. There were some unneeded parts of the book but for the most part, it was very fast-paced. I was disappointed in some plot holes, especially a major one toward the end, but I am trying to chalk it up to a first-time author mistake. I would still recommend this book simply for its unique and alluring concept.

I also love that this book had a nice mystery element to it. So this book took two of my favorite genres, dystopian/science fiction, and thriller/mystery, and put them into one. I didn't think this book would be a mystery but it definitely had that psychological thriller element. I did not see the twists and turns coming and when it happened I was shocked. But once learning the truth I could understand things that I couldn't make sense of before.

I can already see this winning the 2021 Goodreads Choice Award in the Debut category. It is hard to believe this is a debut novel. It is such a well-written story that it is hard to believe the author doesn‘t already have a dozen other best-selling novels. I never, ever give a 5-star review. Maybe a few 4.5 but I can never get myself to give
5 stars, but I can confidently say I think it deserves all 5 of those stars.

This book was a little predictable and included a lot of useless information. It was slow a lot of the time and she just pocks around trying to play detective. I also don't think the relationship is very realistic.Their relationship is more of a formal one so having it be friendly was too forceful and unnatural. So there were some good elements, some bad. But for me, it just didn't meet my expectation and is just a middle-of-the-road type of book.

ninergrl6 Agreed. I just finished it today & was underwhelmed. The pacing lagged & the love story wasn‘t believable. The concept was good but I think the book was trying to tell too many stories at once. For me it would‘ve been more compelling without the quasi-romance. 3y

The plot and the twist at the end were so epic I completely agree this will be a total hit. There were many things that made me get completely lost in the story. One is how realistic it all played out and the way Jake thought. Another thing I loved so much about this book was that we actually got to read parts of the book in this book. I am so glad I got the chance to read this book, one of my favorites.

It didn‘t feel like a finished book. While reading it, it felt like a rough draft with only half a thought not fully formed and executed. Instead of writing things in complete sentences the book was written abbreviated with backslashes between each thought. A lot of the instances this was used was to resay the same thing. Then the ending was better than the rest of the book but also disappointing. The ending was forced and pretty bland..

Most of the book was slow, except for the very beginning and the very end, and the core of the book was just a lot of the same things happening in different ways. Nothing was that significant. All the action in the core of the book had little to do with Milton and most to do with Elijah. I think if the book was presented as being about what it was truly about, it would have been better or at least more understandable.

The story takes us through step by step of the journey the nine went through but we also get to hear part of the story like the author is telling it to us. We get to hear parts of her experience learning about the nine women. There is a family element to the story because the author is related to one of the women. We also get a detective element because Gwen had to do a lot of digging.A wonderful impactful story that opened my eyes to new things.

I also really liked the writing style. You can clearly tell the thinking of the people as they speak. Like you can almost hear the bitterness in the terrorist‘s words. And the words used to describe the scene are perfect for the type of book and sets the mood and tone of the story.

I thought the book had a nice pace. It was fast and a lot of things happen that keeps the book moving forward. I was on the edge of my seat a few times. Jack has to deal with the people who are trying to find the money his father hid also. This of course gets him into a lot of different tense situations. Jack does not know who Ava really is but even with Ava‘s background, she does her best to help Jack and Matty.

I really enjoyed this book. At first, when reading the plot, I thought this book would be cheesy and just like every other book about a guy falling in love at first sight, but as the book went on you could see why they fell in love and could feel the chemistry to the very end. The writing style flows easily, so it is easy to understand and still very engaging to readers.

I also think that the story lacked action. For most of the book, it was just the kids wandering through the woods. Weird because it also lacked description? So, it lacked action and describing details, which is very odd. I did really enjoy the ending and how all the loose ends were tied up and how all those little things you now understood, but to get to that point felt like a long drive.

Every wondered what it takes to get into one of the toughest branches in the military? This book has answered that question and so many more. And this story is more than just his experiences during his life fulfilling careers, but he gives us lessons he has learned from these experiences and how any of us, even us regular people, can learn to be better.

I absolutely loved this book. I finished it within two days and was hooked on to every word. I like that this story had the background of the Vietnam war. It provided a backstory that drove a lot of the tension within the story, but it‘s mainly about the person Jason has become after and the people he has got himself entangled with because of the path he had chosen.

The book was okay, but there wasn‘t really anything special. It wasn‘t slow or fast-paced. Nothing really jumped out but there also isn‘t anything wrong with the book either. It is in the middle of the road. If you like a simple small crime novel then this is for you, but I prefer something with a little more sustenance.
