The Plot
The Plot | Jean Hanff Korelitz
Jean Hanff Korelitzs The Plot is a psychologically suspenseful novel about a story too good not to steal, and the writer who steals it. Jacob Finch Bonner was once a promising young novelist with a respectably published first book. Today, hes teaching in a third-rate MFA program and struggling to maintain whats left of his self-respect; he hasnt writtenlet alone publishedanything decent in years. When Evan Parker, his most arrogant student, announces he doesnt need Jakes help because the plot of his book in progress is a sure thing, Jake is prepared to dismiss the boast as typical amateur narcissism. But then . . . he hears the plot. Jake returns to the downward trajectory of his own career and braces himself for the supernova publication of Evan Parkers first novel: but it never comes. When he discovers that his former student has died, presumably without ever completing his book, Jake does what any self-respecting writer would do with a story like thata story that absolutely needs to be told. In a few short years, all of Evan Parkers predictions have come true, but Jake is the author enjoying the wave. He is wealthy, famous, praised and read all over the world. But at the height of his glorious new life, an e-mail arrives, the first salvo in a terrifying, anonymous campaign: You are a thief, it says. As Jake struggles to understand his antagonist and hide the truth from his readers and his publishers, he begins to learn more about his late student, and what he discovers both amazes and terrifies him. Who was Evan Parker, and how did he get the idea for his sure thing of a novel? What is the real story behind the plot, and who stole it from whom?

Did not quite realize this was going to end up being a mystery/thriller, in a good way. Jake is a somewhat failed novelist teaching at a third-rate MFA program when a student shares his idea for a novel. Several years later, Jake finds out the former student has died without ever publishing that novel, so he steals the idea. A seemingly victimless crime…or is it?

It took me a LONG TIME to get a toehold in this one, but I‘m glad I kept trying. I saw most of the twist coming, but it was interesting to watch the whole thing play out.

A frustrated writer at a third-rate MFA program meets a student with an incredible novel plot. When he finds the student has died, he decides to appropriate the plot and write the novel himself. The book follows the author as well as excerpts from his novel. #audiobook note ⬇️

Finished at exactly the very moment that book club and library return is same day—it was very slow the first four chapters and then as the story became faster paced so did my heart rate and page turning. I will admit to figuring out who the villain was In the storyline but it didn‘t mean I didn‘t need to know ALLLLLL the details. All the warped details.

This audiobook was lots of fun. I loved the main character‘s struggles to not be a washed-up writer. I loved the cringy feeling it gave me as I realized what was going to happen. Even though I figured out the big plot twist earlier on than I would have liked, I enjoyed the ride to the end, which was blessedly NOT a cop out. Perhaps most of all, I enjoyed listening to it delivered by one of my very favorite narrators, Kirby Heyborne.

Meh… I had high hopes for this, with lots of great reviews about this amazing plot twist. Problem is, I got the whole twist thing pretty much straight away.(Not the one in the fictional novel, which wasn‘t that mind-blowing anyway, but the one in the actual book)

Then, with no suspense and pretty unlikeable characters it was just OK. Could have been a soft pick but I‘ve decided to be mean and go with a so-so.

Oryx I actually really liked this one 😃. I did see the twist too from a good bit away, but I just enjoyed the darkness of it and the slow reveal with messed up characters. I thought it was fun - but not one that I'd buy for keeps. A fun palate cleanser. 2mo

10-7-21: My 98th finished book of 2021! Wow, this one had me guessing until the end! I love that! Jacob Finch Bonner is a novelist. Once well respected, now teaching at a 3rd rate college, he meets a student with a plot to beat all plots! As the years go by and he awaits the novel of his student, it never comes so he decides the story should be told and why not by him? A fascinating look at writers and writing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👍🏼📖#️⃣9️⃣8️⃣

I expected a wild ride, but truthfully, it started out a little bumpy. Then the story within a story took off and I buckled up for a fun read. It was also interesting to read on the heels A Ladder to the Sky since both centered on the stories writers write, or don‘t write.

Who owns a story? After creative writing instructor and self-described failed novelist Jake Bonner writes the bestseller that will change his life, he is plagued by fear that the truth will be revealed: the pivotal plot twist was something a student of his shared years before. It's no easy feat to build up a plot twist as a surefire winner, and then deliver in the most meta manner imaginable.

🎧 Jimmy Fallon‘s #1 summer read. I try to read the books on these lists.

This one was not for me.

A book about plagiarism & murder.

I didn‘t like OR like to hate any of the characters. The story was predictable & also unlikable.

Jake, the teacher/author & his crime … the mother/daughter plot … nope. I did like the story within the story but it wasn‘t enough to save it for me in the end. I had zero empathy. 😩

A so-so book

1. So far it‘s the tagged book. I sort of had an inkling that it would end the way it did but it was still a fun ride to get there.
2. “Long Bright River” by Liz Moore. Set in Philly and very atmosphere-y. I think it could be like “Mystic River” (one of the best book-to-move adaptations ever, IMO) if done right.
3. This week I‘m grateful for Amtrak! Taking the train to Baltimore to visit our youngest son on Friday. 🙂

Those who can‘t do, teach. Except Jacob Finch Bonner is teaching writing and really DID have a successful book. He‘s just waiting for his next great idea to hit him.

In walks student Evan Parker who swears he has a sure-fire one of a kind plot. And Jacob spends years waiting to see Evan‘s success.

Turns out Evan Parker passed away, and Jacob sees no reason why he should not take the praise deserved for this brilliant book idea.

The Plot has one of the most jaw-dropping endings I think I have ever read. I wasn't very surprised by who TalentedTom was--I had my suspicions for some time--but the final event absolutely blew me away with its unexpectedness. It is an enjoyable novel, although it did not keep me on the edge of my seat like I had hoped it would. There were times when it just seemed so slow and somewhat uneventful as I waited for something to happen.

I dreaded picking the book up everyday, but I hate DNFing. So I rolled my eyes and finished it. And I was exactly right what was going to happen. It is so obvious it's painful. And how dumb the main character was is unbelievable. I'm just so frikken disappointed.

Rarely do I guess the villain/murderer/bad guy before the reveal, I tend to just enjoy the ride, but this time I did! Soon after the messages started from TalentedTom it occurred to me who was probably behind them & I was right! Don't know if the book will be memorable but that character will!

Eminently readable and an enjoyable summer thriller. The NYT review describes The Plot‘s storyline as “Russian nesting dolls” of twists and turns, an accurate description of the layered mystery. While the whodunit doesn‘t end up a complete shocker, there are many moments you find yourself rooting for the protagonist, despite his flaws.

A thriller by the same author who wrote “You Should Have Known” which became the HBO series The Undoing. I enjoyed it, and there is a twist, sort of, but after reading it and watching the show based on her other book I‘m beginning to think the twist is usually the fact that the twist was staring you in the face all along and you knew it and you can‘t believe it when it turns out that you guessed it from the beginning.
