One of the best books I've read this year, definitely on my #Top21of21 list. Heartbreaking but inspirational, it's an amazing true story of courage and perseverance.

Wow this was just mindblowing, such an exciting yet terrubly sad story.
In 1945 nine women were forced onto a death march.
Knowing what happened at the end of one of those marches they bravely decided to risk running for their lives and trying to escape together.
This is their story.
Travelling across a war torn country, danger dogging their every step hoping to find aid this is a no holds barred horrific depiction of that journey.

Didn‘t get this one as I brought the hardback a few weeks ago. A good read and definitely worth 99p!

Apart from the fact that this was about a horrifying subject, it‘s a brilliant read and I was drawn in and fascinated by each woman‘s story. A really engrossing read.

I‘ve had a really crappy work day. Have only managed about 50 pages of this tonight. But, perspective, I‘ve just had a really crap work day.

Where do I start?
In 1945 a band of nine amazingly brave women made the breath taking attempt to escape from an enforced Nazi death march.
The situation truly was escape or die.
These women though French, Dutch and Spanish are bonded by their communal experiences and won't be parted and this book is the narrative of that awful journey from the place where they ran to the front where they could seek help and get back to their home countries.

What an amazing, heart-breaking but inspirational story. These nine women suffered so much, more than anyone ever should, I had to stop the book at one point and go listen to something else, my heart ached too much.
5 🌟 read, I highly recommend it.

This is really well written. It's the true story of nine women who escaped a Nazi death march. They were political prisoners, members of the French Resistance. It has conversations so it's probably actually historical fiction but it doesn't actually matter.

Imagine it's WWII, the world is turning upside down and in your 20's you join the French Resistance, risking your life to save others.

If you are interested in WWII, you should read this book and learn of these nine badass women. It hit bookshelves on May 4.

The story takes us through step by step of the journey the nine went through but we also get to hear part of the story like the author is telling it to us. We get to hear parts of her experience learning about the nine women. There is a family element to the story because the author is related to one of the women. We also get a detective element because Gwen had to do a lot of digging.A wonderful impactful story that opened my eyes to new things.

The Nine: The True Story of a Band of Women Who Survived the Worst of Nazi Germany is a highly=detailed, excellently-researched historical account about nine women who were resistant fighters and who escaped a labor camp near the end of World War II. The author Gwen Strauss is a descendant of Helene, one of the nine women. The care and attention that the author uses in crafting the narratives for all nine women is evident throughout the book.

As stated in this book, the war stories of women are often pushed aside to elevate the war stories of men. Gwen Strauss decided to change that and set out to learn more about her aunt and the eight women who escaped with her from a death march between concentration camps. This book includes so many details that are often left out of World War II books, because historians rarely give the suffering of women the attention it deserves.

Today‘s #bookmail. While I thought the excerpt that I read felt a bit underdeveloped, the subject matter is fascinating. I‘m hugely in favor of any work that highlights the deeds and contributions of women in history. So I‘m looking forward to digging in.
