Ulysses | James Joyce

Pickpick

It is my opinion that James Joyce does not care about the reader in a traditional sense. He does not actively guide you through his work. For this reason I've heard many people trash talk Ulysses. It is a book that teaches you to look beyond context and insert your own experience into the piece. It will develop you into a marathon-endurance reader, and the small moments of clarity will stay with you.

The Garden of Forking Paths | Jorge Luis Borges

Borges is one of my key inspirations as a writer. He is strange and beautiful, an incredible balance of head and heart and bizarre instinct. Do not read it quickly. Take your time and experience what he's trying to say.

Post---OAP @CoffeeNBooks well, thanks for having me! 6y

ofbooksandme Probably the best thing Argentinians gave to world culture. "The house of Asterion" (was it translated like that?) is one of my favorite short stories in the universe. 6y
Post---OAP @ofbooksandme Agreed! His work changed everything about short fiction for me. Continues to change how I write. 6y

This book is a grand attempt at a certain structure. It's certainly not a failure, it moves through a span of ages, and doesn't force any active relation between the plot lines. Only issue I had was that it's structure is a little obvious. You can tell what he's trying to do, which can be somewhat jarring.

SamAnne I really enjoyed this book. Not perfect, bit I appreciated what he was doing. 6y

Oil! | Upton Sinclair

Mehso-so

I struggled with this book, and I'm trying to process why. It just never reached me emotionally, and rarely struck a chord intellectually. That being said, I read it nine years ago, so my palette might have been too rudimentary. I will give it another try. No book is read until it's read twice.

readinginthedark That's a good standard, I think: "No book is read until it's read twice." 6y
scowler1 Never read Oil, but I read The Jungle in my twenties and I think it changed my life. 6y

A fascinating piece, if not aggressively entertaining. Delillo could have written this as a political thriller, a bit of otiose historical fiction, but instead he focused quite intimately with the supposed mind of America's most famous assasin (assuming he actually committed said assasination), making this book admittedly more dry but also more satisfying. Some books are entertaining in the moment and then forgotten. Libra is remembered.

RaimeyGallant Interesting! And welcome to Litsy! #LitsyWelcomeWagon Some of us put together Litsy tips to help new Littens navigate the site. It's the link in my bio on my page in case you need it. Or if you prefer how-to videos, @chelleo put some together at the link in her bio. @LitsyWelcomeWagon 6y

Smrloomis I really like “not aggressively entertaining.” That is a perfect description of how I feel about the one DeLillo I have read so far. Not planning to attempt another at the moment. Anyway, welcome! 🥳 6y
