This was a fantastic debut. I enjoyed the Yoruba/African-English vernacular (it reminded me of Zora Neale Hurston). The book touches on various issues facing young girls and women that are treated as 2nd class citizens and suffer at the hands of the very men that are suppose to love and protect them. These issues are brought to our attention through the life of 14 year old Adunni who not only dreams, but is determined to get an education. 4 stars

Nute Welcome back to Litsy! I‘m looking forward to getting to know you!🙂 5y

Rion Amilcar Scott has some great work. The World Doesn‘t Require You is a worthwhile read. Also, check out his short story “Shape-Ups at Delilah‘s” in the Oct 7th edition of The New Yorker, also another awesome read.

The Water Dancer: A Novel | Ta-Nehisi Coates
post image
Pickpick

This is a story about a people‘s use of agency during severe oppression, injustice and inequality due to slavery. Water is used as a medium to teleport. Memory is the central theme. Harriet reminds us that “to forget is to truly slave. To forget is to die.” Hiram has great difficulty in recalling his mother. This ties in with another theme of the book, loss. Coates reminds us of all black people have lost as a result of American slavocracy.

May Ntozake Shange rest in peace. I thank her for her many contributions to print media. Sometimes, when I get sad, I go back to and reread "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf" and I am encouraged.

A small, but VERY well-stocked bookstore in Bermuda. I wanted to read about Bermuda's history, so the bookseller suggested "Slaves and Slaveholders in Bermuda: 1616-1782" by Virginia Bernhard. I also grabbed a copy of "The History of Mary Prince." I enjoyed my visit to the Bermuda Book Store.

Only four short stories in and I'm very impressed with this debut. These stories about Jamaicans in America and on the island are vibrantly engaging.

There There: A novel | Tommy Orange
post image

An ok read so far. The stories become interconnected around page 113, then it makes more sense. Initially, I thought it was a book of short stories as told by the descendants of the indigenous people. Tommy pulls it together by embedding history. His New Yorker article "The State" is fantastic. That along with excerpts from There, There can be used in the classroom. For instance, students would be able to identify with Orvil Red Feather's story.

In Dollar Tree's book section AGAIN. I was supposed to be out buying raw honey. I picked up this book, Sweet Forgiveness by Lori Nelson-Spielman and Front Yard by Norman Draper. They all seem interesting, so I'll get the honey tomorrow.
