I liked it enough to keep reading, but it was a bit of a slog. Nice writing. Found myself loving the chapters about the saints most of all.
While I thought the social commentary aspect was well done and on point, I wanted more from Nadia's viewpoint. I came away wondering if I would get more out of Letters to a Young Gymnast.
It would be fantastic if they discovered that you don't need to work hard to win, but unfortunately that's not the case.
So many adults sneer at YA fiction. Maybe they think it's beneath them. Or maybe they don't want to rehash their youth. I think they're missing out. Good YA (like this book) can remind even the most jaded heart of the beauty of love when it's new. Of when the world has hope and the future is wide open. Every heart needs that once in a while. I fell into her book and couldn't get out till I finished it. Read it. Live in the moment.
A bit slow to start, and I kept expecting "more" to happen, but it got under my skin. There's definitely more than meets the eye. I read it fast and generally don't do that unless I really like it.
"Children lived to play. Of course they could be put to work, but in spare moments they took their games as seriously as lunatics did their delusions. Like small gods, children formed miniature worlds out of clay, or even just words. To them, the truth was never simple."
A book about books - what's not to like? Book 2 of my favourite new YA series. A must read..so engaging.
Hits a little too close to home. That's why I loved it. And hated it. And devoured it. :-)
"Smell the soup, cool the soup," Timby said. "Huh?" "It's what they teach us in school when we're upset. Smell the soup." He took a deep breath in. "Cool the soup." He blew out. "Come on, Mama, close your eyes."
Excellent read! Highly recommend for art enthusiasts and those who enjoyed The Goldfinch. It made me want to paint more (while simultaneously thinking I'll never be as good as Sara.)
A book about a library...from the library. Touché. (Summer porch reading? Yes please!)
I hate to admit it, but I enjoyed this. The Bachelor meets Cinderella. I cared about the characters more than I thought I would. An ultra light - but fun - summer read.
This is so-so only because I find it a bit forgettable. I remember liking it when reading it though and definitely think it's a good summer read. And so pretty! I totally judge a book by its cover...
Read the after The Ecliptic because I liked Wood's style so much. He's one to watch. Will definitely pick up his next book.
I'm a butterfly catcher! I knew there was a name for my lack of focus!
If I had chosen differently, and carried out my plan to take a factory job alongside my mother, I might never have painted again. But how much worse off would I have been to live without art than to have it consume me and spit out my bones?
