The Bellwether Revivals
The Bellwether Revivals | Benjamin Wood
14 posts | 19 read | 21 to read
Part Secret History, part Brideshead Revisited for the 21st century, The Bellwether Revivals is a page-turning, romantic, eerie tale of genius and, possibly, madness; a stunning debut for fans of Sarah Waters, Donna Tartt, and Lauren Goff. The Bellwether Revivals opens and closes with bodies. The story of whose bodies and how they come to be spread about an elegant house on the river near Cambridge is told by Oscar, a young, bright working class man who has fallen in love with an upper-class Cambridge student, Iris, and thereby become entangled with a group of close friends, led by Iris's charismatic, brilliant, possibly dangerous brother. For Eden Bellwether believes he can heal -- and perhaps more -- through the power of music. In this masterful debut, we too are seduced by this gilded group of young people, entranced by Eden's powerful personality and his obvious talent as a musician, and caught off guard by the strangeness of Iris and Eden's parents. And we find ourselves utterly unsure as to whether Eden Bellweather is a saviour or a villain, and whether Oscar will be able to solve this mystery in time to save himself, if not everyone else. From the Hardcover edition.

Pickpick

I loved this novel. Moody, mysterious, gothic. I love anything set in a college though.

REPollock I loved this book too! I found it on a recommendation list called something like “10 Books to Read If You Loved The Secret History.” The one I really loved from that list was 6y
Dragon I enjoyed this one too. 6y

This book is not The Secret History, which has pissed off several reviewers. If what you loved about The Secret History was the POV of an outsider welcomed into a close-knit group of privileged, pedantic prigs, only to witness the fucking wheels coming off as they all disappear up their own bums, you should check this one out. It‘s not without problems, but I always dig a book with that plot premise.

callielafleur This is an amazing review. 👏👏👏 6y

People, I am so loving this book. It officially creeped me out in the best way just now. Deets when I finish and review it behind a spoiler scrim.

batsy Ok, you've convinced me! 😆 6y

Oh, but this is another take on a plot that I unabashedly love, in which an insular clique of privileged & pedantic 20-somethings get embroiled in some terrible intrigue, usually made worse by their own narcissism.

batsy Haha, yes! You have described my love for The Secret History perfectly. 6y
REPollock @batsy it‘s so true! Any time one of those “if you loved The Secret History, check out these titles” lists come out, I‘m all *grabby hands* 😍😍😍 6y

“I don‘t think a man can say he‘s truly lived until he‘s seen the world from up in a balloon. You can see for miles. You can breathe the air. Everything‘s so tranquil up there, and the only noise comes from the birds flapping through the clouds, and the whooshing of the gas every now and then.”

I think the best way to read The Bellwether Revivals is to put aside everything you know and love about The Secret History.

Another fantastic bookclub night. Not sure if the book was the best one I ever read but it sure got everyone talking! Note: just read the secret history instead.

Jaimelire I have such mixed feelings about this book. Not sure I liked it, but it sure sticks in your head. 7y

This teetered between a pan and a so-so.And the so-so button reasons-Crest and Paulsen-didn't feature half as much as I would have liked.Other characters were flat and lifeless in comparison. It suffers from the Secret History comparison,as most who are compared to a successful predecessor, but is entertaining in patches. If there's a focus group to increase the popularity of the use of the word wisteria, they played a blinder in this novel!

Reviewsbylola This was a pan for me. I rarely finish a book I dislike to that extent, so it is rare for me to pan a book. 8y
Ais I can definitely see why you thought it was a pan @Reviewsbylola, there was some patches where my eyes hurt from eye rolling so much. And the the ups and downs between Iris and Oscar really grated on me. I did love the storyline for Paulsen and Crest though I have to say-I would have loved a bit more in depth analysis there. 8y

Compared to The Secret History, which is a tough one to be compared to!

k_andrws I read this last summer after being recommended it because I adore TSH so much. I live in Cambridge so it was lovely to recognise the setting, which is beautifully described, but man oh man did I hate the book. I though the characters were so one-dimensional and the story predictable. Not a fan, but hope you enjoy it more than I did! 8y
Ais Oh dear! That's not a glowing review at all! I am always a little bit sceptical of books that are touted as the 'next' of anything or 'if you like X you'll love Y', because invariably they always fall short. I'll let you know how I go @k_andrws! 8y
Laalaleighh Can't wait for your review @Ais the secret history was such a unique reading experience for me. Would love to find something similar! 8y
Ais Me too @Laalaleighh, I'll never forget that feeling after reading it. Definitely up there in my top 10. I'll be sure to tell you how I get on:) 8y

While this book ended up leaving me asking many questions and slightly depressed, it was well written and kept me awake, turning page after page.
