“First loves fixes a life forever... it may not outrank subsequent loves, but they will always be affected by its existence.”
Tried to read x 2, but just couldn‘t get through first ten pages. That being said, it‘s an award winning piece of literature and gets great reviews on Litsy :):) Even though I bailed on it, I‘m keeping it on my bedside pile.... there might be a chance for a third try sometime in the future 🙃
Told from an unique perspective but narration felt contrived at times. Story itself gripping.
Next on my list....
Oh, how I wish I could have loved this book. Although some parts are beautifully written, it has a really slow start and a fairly mediocre ending. I must have missed something since it was a National Book Award Finalist!!
"Just know this one fact--no government official or agency will intervene should a Saudi man decide to put a female in his family to death. This death order can come from innocent activities, logging onto the web, talking to a boy not of family over the telephone, riding in a car w a man who is not her father, brother, husband, or son. This situation is a great disgrace and shame for everyone ..."
Last 3 books have just dragged....hoping this one will get my out of the funk!!🙃🐅
Half way though this fabulous thriller. Haven't read a good ghost story in a while. Wonderfully creepy...
Loved this book!❤ A little hard to keep characters straight in the beginning, but complete redemption with a great story line and twist.
It's a pick!!!
"One of the few pleasing and uplifting impressions furnished by the human race, faced with an elemental disaster, it forgets its cultural muddle-headedness and all its internal problems and enmities and recalls the great common task of preserving itself against the superior might of nature." Freud
Loving this book! Great narrative interplay between past and present. Looking forward to digging in more later today....
Favorite part of the day???? Car pool. Perfect time to dig in to a great book.
"We step out of our solar system into the universe seeking only peace and friendship, to teach if we are called upon, to be taught if we are fortunate." The story of Voyager 1 and 2. Just - wow....
So, so good!! Loved the science and the story....."gentlemen, it's the microbes who will have the last word."
Peter Heller is a favorite!!! First, The Dog Stars and now, Celine. Very different books, but both great reads.
At the risk of straying from popular opinion, I have to give Lab Girl an "it's ok" rating. Loved the environmental message, appreciated the unique perspective on plant life (certainly learned a lot), but the story itself was just okay for me. I found some of her narrative on family life falling short (she mentions important issues, but doesn't explore them). Overall interesting, solid narrative-I'm glad I read it, but ready to start something new.
