Getting to read AND hang out with my husband this morning! That never happens!

Can‘t sleep, so I‘m starting a new read. Thank you, modern marvels of technology, by which I can check out an ebook from the library from my bed and read on a backlit screen instead of turning on a light and risk waking my husband up! As for the book, I‘m interested in seeing how this portrays a woman archaeologist and alternates the narrative between pre-history and now.

Rose and Girl are linked through time by their pregnancies and experiences of what it means to be a woman, a mother, and to survive.

Primal, raw, and unique, this was an interesting read.

I‘m finishing this gem up now - I love how accurately this portrays what it‘s like to be a woman in the field sciences, juxtaposed beautifully with a both touching and brutal tale of what it might have been like to be a female Neanderthal. #archaeology #womeninscience

A better read than clan of the cave bear.

Huh....well the writing was fine and the concept was intriguing but...nothing really seemed to happen. the events in one timeline we're almost identical to the other timeline which was kind of interesting at first but not really by the half way mark.

Listening to the eAudiobook while making some relish!

This book is written as 2 storylines, that of "Girl" the titular character, and that of Rose, the archeologist who discovers Girl's bones. The Girl story was compelling but Rose was not and I don't know what the reason was for including the 2 story lines. I read this for the Riffle September book club and probably would have bailed if not for that. ⭐️⭐️

A strong beginning, a strong ending! A little weak on the middle.

Reading this for (Riffle) book club. It's good so far. Okay. Kind of want to finish it though so I can move on to the mountains of other books waiting for me! 😊

Quickly becoming one of my favourite places. I can supervise Bee while she swims and the place is light-filled. While we haven't moved in yet, we swing by whenever we can and when we need to supervise renos. So far this book hasn't completely pulled me in, but I am hopeful.

Between a so-so and a pan. I liked the premise of this book, but it wasn't as well executed as I expected it to be.

Started this tonight. Forty pages in and feel decidedly undecided...😑

This one gets filed under liked but did not love. I liked reading about Girl and wish the book had just focused on her journey. I did not enjoy the modern storyline nearly as much. I also found the ending to be really abrupt. Everyone else seems to love this one but it is on the lower end of a pick for me.

I need quiet time before work with a book and coffee to help prepare me to face the world. #puremorning #90sinjuly

This was such an interesting read that connected Neanderthals to the modern humans. Girl and Rose are separated by a span of 40,000 years but their shared experience of pregnancy builds a dual narrative that's quite compelling. Full review is on my Wordpress, link in bio!

This book checks all my boxes! I loved the alternating storylines of the Neanderthal called Girl and the modern day archeologist Rose. Sciencey, feministy goodness!

I'm about a third of the way through my current read and I'm loving it!

Twin storylines, two women: Girl, a young Neanderthal living 40,000 years ago; and Rose, a contemporary scientist excavating the archeological site where Girl's skeleton has been found buried together with a Homo sapiens. I thought I would prefer the prehistoric timeline, but I felt more emotionally invested in Rose, whose advanced pregnancy threatened her professional career. An intriguing exploration of motherhood and what it means to be human.

Sunday brunch! Litsy, you're about to see a lot of pizza 🍕posts because last night we had an epic pizza party and we have leftovers for daysss. Turns out, pizza crust is super easy to make and it was great! These are a spring cream + asparagus slice and a simple Margherita slice.

Loved this book! Two different time periods though mostly set in the pre-historic, I really enjoyed both storylines without any favouritism of one over the other.

A fascinating book that tells the story of two women from different time periods. I was not a big fan of Rose's character but the parts of the book that focused on Girl more than made up for that. I loved reading about the life of a Neanderthal family and their struggle to survive in a very difficult environment.

I enjoyed this book for the most part. I am a big fan of Jean Auel's books and this brought brief flashes of memories to mind. I liked the correlation with modern day and the never ending struggle to find a place in the world as a pregnant woman or mother. It really shows how easily dismissed and vulnerable we can be as women and mothers and how much we should be able to rely on others but sometimes cannot. So we forge on.

I really enjoyed this book. You follow two women, one is a young Neanderthal and the other is an archeologist who discovers remains of a Neanderthal with a modern human. The women are connected through their experiences even though they are thousands of years apart in time.

Giving this one a try. Has anyone read it? Did you like it?

A story about an archeologist who learns through her excavation just how much our basis of life is shared with Neanderthals. I was entranced enough to read it in one afternoon.

I organized my iBooks, because that's seriously the easiest thing in my life to control. My top to-reads from iBooks for the rest of this year, a nice pretty 20 books. I have a secondary "priority" folder for the stuff I want to read as I clear this shelf. Now, to pick something to dive into tonight since it's not even 8 pm and I'm already in bed.

This was an interesting read. Reminiscent of both Clan of the Cave Bear and Island of the Blue Dolphins, it follows the path of two very different women. One a Neanderthal woman and the other a paleoanthropologist. Both women interact with family and responsibilities in different yet similar ways.

Loving this book! Great narrative interplay between past and present. Looking forward to digging in more later today....

I don't know which to read first! I've heard such great things about all of them!

Wow! Really enjoyed this one! 4 star read! Very captivating and interesting! The characterization of motherhood, in particular, really wow'd me! So realistic and unflinchingly honest! Definitely recommend this one!

Pre-historical fiction! Wonderful examination how we as contemporary people are still connected to our ancient ancestors in very primitive ways. Most memorable for me was the scene where the Girl (Neanderthal) eats the....well that's actually so many scenes! Really enjoyed this very escapist novel. A meditation on living a very simple and mindful life as well.
